Opel has added a new entry point to its family-friendly SUV line-up, and the new Frontera Start is aimed squarely at buyers who prefer useful features over unnecessary fuss.
It still looks suitably chunky, with black mirror housings, black bumpers, underrun-style trim, and 16-inch steel wheels wearing fresh black covers. In other words, budget-friendly does not have to mean bland.
Inside, the Frontera Start covers the essentials with air conditioning, a six-way adjustable Intelli-seat, rear parking assistance, and lane departure warning. A smartphone station handles entertainment, while a 10-inch driver display serves up key vehicle information. The cabin is roomy too, offering 460 litres of boot space with the rear seats raised and around 1,600 litres with the 60:40 split-folding seats down.
Powertrain choices are pleasantly broad. A new 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine delivers 99bhp through a six-speed manual gearbox, while buyers can also choose a 109bhp hybrid with an electrified six-speed dual-clutch transmission. For those ready to ditch the fuel pump, the 111bhp Frontera Electric Start pairs a 44kWh battery with local emissions-free driving.
A Comfort Pack adds a dual-level boot floor and vanity mirrors, because even the sensible trim deserves a small treat.
