The Volkswagen Group - which houses multitude of automakers from Skoda to Lamborghini - is exemplary when it comes to shared modular construction with the versatile MQB platform. It underpins any small cars from the Audi A3 to the Volkswagen Golf. Likewise are Peugeot with their new EMP2 platform that underpins the latest C4 Picasso amongst other cars.
Japanese automaker and also the World's biggest - Toyota - is looking into adapting the Volkswagen formula for its cars. Toyota's take on the MQB platform, will be called the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) and will feature a customisable platform that can be used in a variety of models.
Primarily models across the range will share up to 30 percent of parts, and eventual cross-sharing might increase to 80 percent - for maximum cost savings and a consistent ride and handling among all models. Toyota officials claim cross-sharing could bring in overall development savings of up to 30 percent, while the extra cash can be capitalised to improve the individual models.
