Mazda2 Sedan 1.5 (A) vs Toyota Vios 1.5E (A)
26 Oct 2010  |  Comparison Reviews
The Mazda2 Sedan and the Toyota Vios have been two of the most popular compact sedans available in its segment. Thus, making a good buying decision between these two is indeed a tough one.

Driven my friend Vios as well as test drive one myself. Overall it is a decent family car. But probably too boring to drive it for long term.

In the end, I decide to expand my search to Korea cars, whom they have made vast improvements over the years.

What I like
- Flat rear seat flooring.
- Decent legspace
- Rear boot space is sufficient for average family needs.
- Good fuel consumption
- Cute exterior design

What I do not like
- Rough engine sound. (A big turn off)
- Centre speedometer display. It is a very very bad design..
- Thailand made car selling close to japan made car price.

Just bought my Vios Auto 3 mths ago. Although i know that it is a made in Thai Car, decided to get it coz its a well known japanese car and the cheapest among all Jap Cars. But issues occured shortly, loud engine noise, rear window went down cannot come up, tearing and rust appeared on outer layer of windows. Should have trusted my pal to buy nissan or mitshibushi instead!

Other cars tested :
New Mazda 3 - Gd but not worth the price and crampy as the old model
Mitshibushi EX - Gd but Noisy engine and over my budget
Nissan Latio - Very Gd but over my budget
Nissan Sylphy - Very Gd but over my budget
Never bother to test Honda coz overpriced and made in Thai!

What I like
Bought Vios coz the price is the Cheapest among all Japanese Brands

What I do not like
loud engine noise
fc so so
no power when going up the hill
aircon so so
cheap soft interior plastics including dashboard, steering wheel and side doors (Can make a dent if i knocked it abit hard)
Crampy front and rear seats (tested other cars and found out that nissan latio have the biggest interior space for 1.5 cc cars!) Should have got Nissan instead!
Lousy grade sofa
short ceiling
made in thai
too many Vios on the streets!
stupid speedometer in the centre which i got to tilt my head everytime! Wondered who designed it?

The truth be told, its ugly... inside and outside.. Really one of the most ugly car sold in mkt.

Drive itself is bland... Cant feel what the grip level of the front tyres.. Numb of chasis feel...

What I like
Toyota reliability and borneo aftersales service...
cheap to buy and extremely affordable to maintain it... Lots of aftermarket parts available

What I do not like
Its really ugly.... the centre console is just such a drag. Lots of boyracer inspired to turn this bread and butter model into a sports car lookalike...

Got the Vios despite hearing many negative feedbacks about it. I was glad with my choice. Handling is good, ride is comfortable. Steering feel is just right. The boot is big too. Best of is that it is fuel efficient. Cabin space is good too for big sized guys.

Pickup is good for its class. I believe those who gave negative feedbacks are probably those who downgraded from a better car or have really high expectations. So if you are interested in Vios do get a test drive and you will know.

All in all a very good car for a day-to-day basis. Not a car for you to race around but something reliable which you can have no worries driving it.

What I like
Big boot.
Folding mirror.
Comfortable ride.
Pickup.
Reliability.
Cabin Space.

What I do not like
Slightly noisy on high rev.

Simple economical car. Not too much pros but horsepower so so only. Cant ask for too much because it is made in Thailand. Need to step harder on accelerator for high speed.

What I like
Room better than old vios. Fuel consumption so so 13km/L without spare tires. Looks ok.

What I do not like
Made in Thailand, no climate a/c, keyless entry & start, a/c so so only

This is my first 1.5 Vios - Auto "E" model and I got it from Borneo Motors in March 2009. Sold the car in December 2009 due to it's poor interior quality and noisy engine. Toyota is a good Japanese brand but Toyota management decision to manufacture Toyota cars in Thailand and then sell it as a Japanese price Toyota is definitely not a good buy in terms of the quality and re-sale value you can fetch unless you can get a low COE of S$2 in Nov'08. The engine noise is "loud" and the car is almost like with no sound insulation especially if you're driving on rough road surfaces on the highways. After using the Vios for six months, the interior plastic begin to show signs of detoriation and this shouldn't be happening for a Japanese brand seadan. The only acceptable Thailand made Toyota is the Camry but looking at the current car price, I think you can get a better buy for a European car at a price tag of S$100k or slightly above S$100k.

What I like
1) Good FC of around 13-14km per litre
2) Though this is a 1.5 car, you can easily over take vehicle at highways (using Shell V-Power petrol)

What I do not like
1) Lousy interior look - look like cheap plastic
2) Loud engine noise
3) Poor sound insulation on the roads
4) "Floating" feel especially when you are driving above 100km/hr.

Those were the day when the 1st generation Vios is applauded for it's value-for-money, responsive engine and undisputed FC. The old Vios was a zippy ride with a punchy 1.5l 109bhp engine, yet able to churn out an outstanding FC of ave 13.5-14.5km/l. It's truly the right formula for Toyota, even if it's made in Thailand.

Question is, does the current new Vios live up to the expection as the old horse? First, the New Vios spots a new chassis borrowed from the Yaris which improved in cabin safety, however, the looks of the new Vios is fudgly as the rounded shape resembles something like a bug. The interior to me is rather dull and plasticky, but then you can't expect much from a no-frills car. The dash meters are at the middle so one might need to get used to it.

Driving the new Vios is a standard affair. The loud growl from the engine still reminisce those of the old vios, however I felt something to be missing. Although the engine revs to move, the car is not moving as fast as it should. The feeling of the torque pushing the chassis and that punchy feeling in the old Vios CANNOT be found in the new Vios.

The Automatic transmission is pretty rough as times and you need to really floor it to get the correct gearshift to work.

The cabin noise is pretty intrusive, the car practically can zero sound proofing. This is something that flawed even the old Vios, but one would expect a tad improve for a newer model.

The handling of the Vios, like it predecessor, is good enough for normal drive but lacks that feel for the road. But the car does get more stable in highspeed, perhaps that is due to it's heavier weight. The braking is also not as bitey as the old horse, which I later realise they are giving rear drum brakes unlike the all disc brakes from the old horse.

FC of the new Vios is no longer as magical as the old horse, an average of 13km/l for the Auto version but it's still considered good by the 1.5l standard.

Perhaps for those who have yet to try a toyota and want to get a feel of this no-frills car can give it a go. After all you will have a piece of mind from the reliabilty of Toyota. But for those who already own the old horse, I suggest you look elsewhere as this is clear a step back from the old horse.

So does the current new Vios live up to the expection as the old horse? My answer is a clear NO.

What I like
- Somewhat competent engine
- decent FC

What I do not like
- Cabin Noise
- Rough Transmission
- lukewarm handling.

I test drove this vehicle a few months back and was pretty impressed by it.

The engine response was good albeit a tad noisy at higher revs, and the overall handling of the car was noteworthy.

The steering is a little too light for my liking and the interior is rather basic. Sound insulation is average at most.

However, given the highly competitive price tag, I would still recommend this vehicle to many. Being a Toyota, reliability and maintenance should be a non-issue.

What I like
- Peppy Engine

- The Sports Package (Makes the exterior of the car more aggressive)

- Wide range of after market accessories

What I do not like
- Light Steering

- Insulation

- Basic Interior

Owned a 2006 Manual Gearfacelift model in July 2006. Using the car for 3 yrs and 3 month. Overall experience with Vios is good. Due to the fantastic fuel consumption rate, this is the best offer you can get if you are looking for a car with decent power, yet good efficiency in fuel consumption.

What I like
1) Fuel efficiency at 15km/L to 17km/L based on 60% highway and 40% city ratio.

2) Spare Parts can be easily found at reasonable price.

3) Wide variety of aftermarket upgrade options at very affordable price, from brand new to used parts due to the huge population of Vios in Singapore.

4) Safety features such as dual front airbag, front and rear disk break & ABS were available even for the basic model. unusual for car at this catagory.

5) Young and sporty design unlike a typical toyota.

What I do not like
1) Poor interior design & low quality interior.

2) Plenty of room for improvement for sound proofing.

This is my first call, and I choose a Japanese car like Toyota for its reliability. After having it for more than 6 months, I find it to have a smooth drive and pretty easy to handle for a first time car buyer like me. The fuel consumption is pretty good, that makes it even more affordable. The flat rear floor board makes the car more spacious, and can easily carry 5 adults without much discomfort.

What I like
Economically priced
Good fuel consumption
Easy handling
Good for first hand buyer
Excellent service from BM

What I do not like
Interior, especially a better dashboard or radio/cd player design

Cannot expect anything more from this car for the pricing.

From having relatives to colleagues driving this car 4 to 7 years, non had complaint on the reliability of this car. Yes, it never break-down on them before except for normal wear and tear. Even the wear and tear seems to last longer compare to similar category car on components other than tyres.

I bought this car few months back after choosing between few brands. I choose toyota as I drive in malaysia often. Yes, even if really break-down I am not afraid as you can get spare parts easily anywhere & anytime! Unlike some others brand, if break down in malaysia you will be unsure on the possibility on getting a parts in the fastest time or else get your car tow back to sg in worst case.

Although do not really like the round round looks... well the reliability outbeats everything i'm looking for.

Drove up to melacca recently cruising 120-150km/hr, fuel consumption average of 16.4km/l... really happy with it too.

Engine noisy? Ya, only during fast pick up. If at cruising speed, the sound are normal as compare to other cars. Nothing to fuss about.

What I like
Reliability.
Parts available everywhere in malaysia.
Low fuel Consumption.
Flat floor at rear.
More spacious current model compared to previous model.
Boot space is good.
Foldable rear seat (G-model)
Small u-turn radius.

What I do not like
The round round look.

Went for a trip in Malaysia and wanted to rent a Nissan X-trail but ended up with Vios as it was only 2 weeks old.

Driven it for 2 weeks. To me, the car feels ok at first look, cabin space small but acceptable. But the shock came when we started driving it, the engine, though responsive, but sounded like a diesel taxi, it was very loud for a new car.... Not sure there is any difference between those imported to Malaysia or Singapore, but never expect it to be this loud for petrol cars at this modern time.

After driving for a week, gotten used to the noise. Basically the fuel consumption was good and enough power for the car as well for overtaking. I was thinking to myself, well for SGD 30k +, can do lah, afterall, is a Toyota.

After I got back, suddenly feels my Merc is very silent :). Forgotten about it for a while but 2 days back, my friend who took delivery of his new Vios 1 month back, also complained to me about the noise. Checked the price and is pricing at almost 57k !!!

I think is way way over value for this Thai made car. With the Korean improving fast in term of outlook and quality, I feel Japanese will soon be feeling the pinch if they dont buck up.... Toyota went to Thailand to make their cars due to economic reason, but dont see the car price any cheaper for consumers...

What I like
- Engine does have enough power for over-taking

- Fuel Consumption

- Compact and zippy

What I do not like
- Engine a bit rough

- Noise level very high in cabin

- Price tag

This Vios is going to be my tenth car. I have owned japanese, korean and continental cars before this VIOS. Tested this car twice before deciding to buy it. Heard a lot of complains about the noise but I think the engine noise is bearable unless you are used to driving bigger luxury cars. Compared to my prevouis VW Golf Mark 5, the engine noise is more or less the same. And it is a Toyota, a brand that is very nuch known for making reliable cars. Had two korean makes before and I've learned about spending a little bit more for a Japanese car is a better choice long term. By the way, its been a vehicle of choice for taxi companies in Indonesia for their ability to take punishment.

What I like
Everything about this car is simple, no unnecessary electronics, fuel efficient and easy to drive.

What I do not like
Nothing really, not yet, anyway.

Just to share my opinion - My family was going around to shop for a 2nd car for my wife/daughter (sharing) 2 weeks ago, and tested the vios car at BM. Basically is an average car but I dropped the idea of buying it because of the engine noise is loud, sound proofing is very bad even with a price quoted at 50+K with royalty discount because I own an Altis 1.8 which is just past 3 years old; so far so good that didn't give me any problem but I am considering to change by end of this year if the price is good.

What I like
Nothing special that I like, all are basic features provided.

What I do not like
Engine sound is too noisy.
