Following its debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, BMW has unveiled the production model of the M4 GTS, a souped up and higher-performance version of BMW's two-door darling, the M4.
A quick look by the numbers: its got 493bhp, a weight reduction of about 91kg, does 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds, and only 700 will be built.
The M4 GTS is also the first production car to feature a water injection system, which injects a fine spray into the intake system, thereby reducing intake air temperatures. This helps to bump up power from the M4's turbocharged inline-six by 16 percent, and torque by 10 percent. But despite the increase in power, BMW claims that the M4 GTS returns the same mileage as the standard M4.
A big part of the M4 GTS's improved performance is also down to its weight reduction. The incorporation of aluminium and carbon fibre, as well as the carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) hood, allows BMW to cut weight off the M4 GTS. CFRP is also used for the driveshaft. Inside the car, the centre console is 30 percent lighter than in the normal M4, and the rear seats are gone, and is instead trimmed in glass-fibre-reinforced plastic (GFRP). That, and those cool M sports bucket seats, swathed in Alcantara.
The track capabilities of the M4 GTS is highlighted by a three-way M coilover suspension, combined with upgraded carbon ceramic brakes. Up front, the GTS sits on 19-inch wheels, whilst the rear features 20-inch wheels, and transmission is the seven-speed, M-DCT dual-clutch unit.
The optional Clubsport Package can further enhance the affinity of the BMW M4 GTS with the race track. It includes a roll bar in Acid Orange behind the front seats, a race-specification six-point harness and a fire extinguisher.
