Volkswagen has premiered the pioneering ID.3 before the International Motor Show in Frankfurt.

A long wheelbase and short overhangs will result in class leading interior space for the ID.3
This first model from the ID. series features carbon-neutrality, the impressive driving dynamics characteristic of electric cars, and full digital connectivity. Like all future ID. models, the ID.3 is based on the new Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), which has been designed for an electric drive system without compromise.

The interior of the ID.3 is also revolutionary. The long wheelbase of the MEB layout, combined with very short overhangs, results in an expansive vehicle interior. The five-seater ID.3 also sets new standards in the compact class.

For the driver, an entirely digital and redesigned display elements and controls ensure intuitive use of the ID.3. Apart from the display in the cockpit, a centrally-mounted 10-inch touch display has also been newely developed for the car, and will provides drivers with all necessary key information.

All controls on the ID.3 will use touch-sensitive buttons, save for the electric window and hazard light switch
The car also features a new ID. Light system, which supports drivers with an LED strip during navigation and can, for instance, prompt them to brake in the event of any dangers. All controls - including those on the electrically adjustable multifunction steering wheel - are operated using touch-sensitive buttons, with only the electric windows and hazard warning lights still operated using tactile switches. Intuitive control is also supplemented by intelligent natural voice control. With App Connect, the ID.3 can also be connected to smartphones within seconds.

The batteries in the ID.3 are also integrated into the underbody of the car, delivering a positive effect on driving dynamics, as it lowers the centre of gravity of the ID.3. The ID.3 is also characterised by optimum weight distribution between front axle and rear axle.

Entry level battery will offer a range of 330km, while the largest battery offered will deliver a range of 550km
At launch in Germany, the ID.3 is available with three battery size options. The basic variant has a usable energy content of 45kWh and enables an electrically powered WLTP range of up to 330km. Alongside this is a battery variant with 58kWh, which enables the ID.3 to achieve a range of up to 420km, while the capacity of the largest battery on offer is 77kWh, which translates to an electric range of up to 550km. Thanks to its fast charging capability, it is possible to charge the ID.3 to a range of around 290km within 30 minutes, using a charging output of 100kW.

The first edition - the ID.3 1st - will be sold with a 58kWh battery which is driven by an electric motor at the rear axle. It generates 198bhp and delivers a maximum torque of 310Nm, facilitating a maximum speed of 160km/h.

Higher spec models will receive aesthetic touches such as ambient lighting and larger wheels
The basic version of the ID.3 1st includes a navigation system, a DAB+ digital radio, seat heating and steering wheel heating, armrests at the front, a Mode Two charging cable and 18-inch light-alloy wheels.

The ID.3 1st Plus will additionally feature a rear view camera system, Adaptive Cruise Control and an advanced keyless access locking and starting system. The vehicle interior of the ID.3 1st Plus also includes design seats, a centre console with two USB-C connections and ambient lighting.

Forming part of the exterior equipment scope are tinted windows, the exterior Style package in silver, matrix LED head lights, matrix side lights, brake lights, turn indicators and taillight clusters as well as 19-inch light-alloy wheels.

The top-of-the-range version, the ID.3 1st Max, also includes an augmented reality head-up display, the Beats sound system, a large panoramic sliding/tilting glass roof as well as 20-inch light-alloy wheels. This equipment scope is supplemented by a lane keeping system with Emergency Assist, a lane change system, telephony featuring contactless high-voltage battery charging and comfort seats.
