BMW's first four-door coupe in the premium compact segment makes its foray onto our sunny shores, promising plenty of aesthetic appeal and dynamic capability.

With over 400,000 Gran Coupe models sold worldwide, the success of BMW's Gran Coupe family cannot be disputed. BMW now expands the franchise with the launch of the new 2 Series Gran Coupe - its first four-door coupe concept in the premium compact segment - here in Singapore.

High-gloss black band at the rear adds emphasis to the width of the vehicle

Built in Leipzig, the first-ever BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has all the ingredients to fuel the enthusiasm of new, extroverted and always connected buyers by bringing with it high levels of individuality, aesthetic appeal and emotional engagement, backed up by innovative control and connectivity technology, excellent everyday usability and the dynamic capability for which BMW is renowned.

At 4,526mm in length and 1,800mm in width, but standing just 1,420mm tall, the 2 Series Gran Coupe has a sporty, low and broad-set stance on the road.

It also draws from its larger stablemates with features such as the four frameless side doors and the contoured kidney grille bars. At the rear, a high-gloss black band runs up to and encircles the centrally located BMW badge, emphasising the width of the vehicle.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe offers 33mm of extra rear kneeroom over the BMW 2 Series Coupe

Practicality is not compromised on the interior, with the new car sporting 33mm of extra rear kneeroom over the BMW 2 Series Coupe, as well as a seating position that is 12mm higher.

The boot of the new car is capable of holding 430 litres, which can be expanded further by folding down the 40:20:40 split rear seat backrest. The tailgate opens automatically at the press of a button or the wave of a foot with the Comfort Access function.

Connectivity is guaranteed with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which groups two 10.25-inch screens and operates on BMW's Operating System 7.0. BMW's Intelligent Personal Assistant, which allows all passengers to access various vehicle functions and obtain information simply by speaking, also features in the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

302bhp from a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder will send the 2 Series Gran Coupe M235i xDrive to 100km/h from rest in 4.9 seconds

Two petrol engines from the latest-generation BMW EfficientDynamics family are currently offered.

The three-cylinder unit in the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 218i produces 138bhp and a maximum torque of 220Nm, allowing the car to accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 8.7 seconds and to reach a top speed of 215km/h. This engine is paired with a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission.

The four-cylinder engine in the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe M235i xDrive meanwhile, has an output of 302bhp with a maximum 450Nm of torque, enough to bring the car to 100 km/h from rest in just 4.9 seconds, and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. This engine is mated to an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

All BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe models have a multi-link rear axle, while those looking for more handling prowess in the 218i can opt for the M Sport variant, which comes with M Sport suspension, a 10mm reduction in ride height, as well as M Sport steering and the M Sport brakes.

Two 10.25-inch screens feature in the interior and operate on BMW's Operating System 7.0

Adaptive suspension including Variable Damper Control also features in the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe M235i xDrive, along with near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology borrowed from the BMW i3.

The technology significantly improves traction when the car pulls away, corners, or accelerates on dry and wet roads in all driving conditions. The slip controller is now positioned directly in the engine control unit rather than in the control unit for the Dynamic Stability Control system, eliminating the long signal paths and allowing information to be relayed three times quicker for more precise control of wheel slip.
