The 37th Thailand International Motor Expo 2020 drew to a close with bookings of 33,753 cars - a figure led by small sedans followed by SUVs and motorcycles. 1.2 million visitors attended the Motor Expo, injecting over $2.18 million of spending into the economy. Meanwhile, the response to the Motor Expo Online Platform was more enthusiastic than expected.
Kwanchai Paphatphong, the Organising Chairman of the Motor Expo 2020 revealed, "The Motor Expo this year has been considered a success, thanks to the support of all concerned including car companies, motorcycle companies, ancillary equipment vendors and visitors, while credit must also be given to the government sector which has done well in keeping the spread of COVID-19 under control."
"Despite the pandemic crisis that has played havoc with the global economy, vehicle sales volume at the event has been satisfactory as a result of several new model launches with special promotions. Total bookings of the 31 car brands fell only 9.9% from last year while the motorcycle bookings dropped 31.7%."
Information given by participants in the 'Buy a Car, Win a Car' activity revealed that the top five car brands were Honda, Toyota, MG, Mazda and BMW. The sales volume of the umbrella category of sedans were 40.9%, and further broken down into 23.9% sedans, 15.6% hatchbacks and 1.4% others.
SUVs accounted for a 40.4% share - an increase from 33.4% of the previous year. The top five models sold were were the MG ZS, Isuzu MU-X, Toyota Corolla Cross, Mazda CX-30 and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
Pickup trucks took 12.2% share - slightly down from 2019. The top five were Isuzu D-Max, Ford Ranger, Toyota Revo, Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara. Luxury cars had a total bookings of 3,783 units, and the five brands that drew the most interest were BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Porsche and Audi.
The 21 brands of motorcycles who participated in the show had a total of 4,946 bookings, 31.7% down from 2019. Based on information obtained from participants in 'Buy a Motorbike, Win a Big Bike', the top five motorcycles that buyers participated in the activity were Honda, GPX, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Triumph.
The average price of cars sold at the event was $63,464 and the average price of motorcycles sold was $10,251. The event had 1,186,387 visitors who altogether spent around $2.18 million.
Motor Expo Online Platform, a parallel event in digital media introduced for the first time this year, welcomed 165,078 visitors and had 314,515 clip viewings. Also introduced for the first time was the Motor Expo Exclusive Visitor service, as a service extended to VIPs.
Additionally, the Join Boat Platform attracted a lot of interest as water tourism has been gaining popularity among car lovers in Thailand due to its higher levels of privacy afforded. And as an added bonus, it acts as a new travel experience.
