Volvo showcases the Concept Recharge, its template for an electrified future

Volvo unveiled the Concept Recharge, which will be the Swedish automaker's template for the next generation of all-electric Volvos.
True to its heritage of Scandinavian design, the Concept Recharge has the mantra of 'less but better' at its core. By removing the internal combustion engine, Volvo's designers have been able to adjust the car's proportions to increase interior space while also improving aerodynamic efficiency.
Similarly, by placing a full battery pack underneath the flat floor, designers have been able to extend the wheelbase and overall length of the Concept Recharge. The result is shorter overhangs, as well as more interior space, including a large storage area between the front seats.
The concept car also introduces Volvo's new minimalist design language. All unnecessary elements have been removed and what remains is treated with high-precision detailing. The traditional grille has been replaced with a shield-like structure, supported by a new interpretation of Volvo Cars' Thor's Hammer head light design.
At the back, signature vertical rear lamps connect to the brand's design heritage, but are reimagined with a set of wings that extend at higher cruising speeds to further improve overall aerodynamics.
Inside, a large, 15.0-inch standing touchscreen is the centrepiece of the company's next generation connected infotainment system, designed to be logical and intuitive to use. It goes hand in hand with the other hallmarks of Scandinavian design in the cabin - clean lines and extensive use of natural materials.
