  • Say goodbye to honking at pedestrians with Nissan's Canto technology

Canto generates artificially simulated driving sounds, alerting road users to the electric vehicle's presence in a pleasant manner.

Nissan has announced the start of sales for the all-electric Nissan Leaf, which will come equipped with a new Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) named 'Canto'.

Fully compliant with European automotive regulations, the AVAS has been designed to transmit artificially simulated driving sounds, alerting road users to the presence of the near-silent electric vehicle in an aurally pleasing manner. It is intended to become the signature brand sound for all future Nissan electric vehicles.

Canto has been carefully created to satisfy a broad range of sonic palettes
Canto has been carefully created by sound designers and engineers at Nissan Japan, with adaptation for European markers fulfilled by Nissan Technical Centre Europe.

Incorporating a broad spectrum of sonic palettes, Canto varies in tone and pitch depending on whether the vehicle is accelerating, decelerating, or reversing. Attention has also been given to the way humans hear and process sound waves.

Automatically activated when travelling at speeds up to 28km/h, Canto carefully complements its surroundings and is clearly audible, without being too alarming to pedestrians, residents and passengers. Ultimately, the bespoke edition of Canto will be a welcome addition to the sonic soundscape of cities worldwide.

On top of the revolutionary Canto technology, the 2021 Nissan Leaf offers the perfect blend of smart driving and connectivity, being equipped with in-car Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, as well as Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention which comes as standard.
