  • BMW XM enters final phase of development testing

BMW has announced fresh powertrain figures and given us an approximate reveal date for the XM as the car enters the final stages of development testing.

BMW has announced that its first bespoke M model, and the first full-on M model to make use of an electrified drive, the BMW XM, is already completing the final phase of its series development process.

The prototype cars seen in the pictures don't reveal much about the body of the XM, although it does look set to get the sizable front grille, alongside the slim head lights of the XM Concept, following from the facelifted X7 and 7 Series.

The BMW XM looks set to retain the quad hexagonal tailpipe arrangement as seen in the XM Concept
More exciting perhaps, is the fact that the concept's gently sloping roofline, along with the two cant rails at either side of the roof look like they have been retained, albeit in a slightly muted fashion. Those tasty hexagonal quad tailpipes, one stacked above another at either end of the car, also look like they will be retained from the concept.

BMW states that the XM will come equipped with a newly developed V8 paired to an electric motor for a total system output of 644bhp and an astonishing 800Nm of total torque.

The all-electric range of the BMW XM is said to stand at 80km, based on WLTP figures, while the firm's first hybrid-specific M xDrive four-wheel drive system will deliver all this power onto the road.

Being built from the ground up as a BMW M car, the XM also promises high handling performance, thanks to 50:50 weight distribution, alongside BMW's Adaptive M Professional suspension as standard. The latter is described as combining model-specific springs and electronically controlled shock absorbers, along with an electromechanical roll stabilising system.

Expect the BMW XM to make its debut at the end of 2022, as part of the celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary of BMW M. The BMW XM will enter series production from December 2022 at BMW Group Spartanburg plant in the U.S.A.
