BMW has revealed a new, hardcore M4 CSL.
A lighter, lower, faster, and firmer limited edition version of the alrighty mighty fast BMW M4, the car makes it premiere right in time for the 50th anniversary celebrations of BMW M.
Extra-lightweight M Carbon ceramic brakes and special light-alloy wheels are but part of the weight saving measures on the BMW M4 CSL Just how fast is this new CSL? Try this on for size: BMW states it has already posted the fastest lap times ever for a series-produced BMW car around the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit, stopping the clock at just seven minutes and 15.67 seconds for the 20.6km version of the track.
Aiding this lap time is a power bump for the BMW M4 CSL's 3.0-litre engine, which now generates a total of 543bhp (40bhp more than the BMW M4 Competition).
BMW states this power bump is courtesy of a rise in the maximum charge pressure of the two mono-scroll turbochargers, which have been raised from 1.7 bar to 2.1 bar, alongside model-specific tweaks to the engine management. All this power will be put onto the road solely via the rear wheels.
The glass covers of the taillights on the BMW M4 CSL utilise intricate light threads to generate a unique light signature And aft of those turbochargers is a weight-minimised titanium rear silencer, designed to generate a racing-car-inspired, emotionally engaging engine note especially for the new BMW M4 CSL.
On the handling front, the BMW M4 CSL gets new front-end strut braces developed entirely from scratch to raise the chassis rigidity of the M4 CSL, alongside model-specific settings for the car's camber, dampers, auxiliary springs and anti-roll bars, all done to optimise steering precision and handling.
And the entire car has also been lowered by a total of eight millimetres compared with the BMW M4 Competition Coupe.
In the cabin, the M4 CSL gets a centre console made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic, alongside M Carbon full bucket seats But of course, this coupe wouldn't be fitting of the CSL name if not for an extensive round of weight-saving measures. Fat busting measures here include the fitment of M Carbon full bucket seats, which are 24kg lighter than the regular items found on the BMW M4 Competition.
A further 21kg have been saved by removing the rear seats and seat belts, while extra-lightweight M Carbon ceramic brakes and special light-alloy wheels, springs and struts, help to save on another 21kg.
Paring back the amount of soundproofing plus switching to ultra-lightweight sound insulation saved close to another 15kg, supported by the extensive use of carbon fibre exterior components, which saves another 11kg.
And while we are on the topic of the exterior, you'll also be able to identify this BMW M4 CSL from the yellow-tinted cast from its optional Laserlight head lights as first seen in the BMW M5 CS. And at the rear, the glass covers are said to sport intricate light threads woven into them, for a truly distinctive light signature when driving in the dark.
Production of the BMW M4 CSL will begin in a limited run of exactly 1,000 examples at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in July 2022.
