  • Hyundai and Michelin are doubling down on R&D for EV-specific tyres

After collaborating on the well-received IONIQ 5, the carmaker and tiremaker are continuing their work together on rubbers catered to EVs.

Hyundai and Michelin are entering yet another collaboration oriented towards EVs.

A three year partnership will see both companies continuing their dedication to the auto industry's electrification, through the research and development of EV-optimised tyres.

The recent MoU signing follows a five-year partnership between both firms
Concurrently, the firms will also undertake innovations to make the rubbers more eco-friendly and future-proof. These include the incorporation of sustainable materials and processes, as well as a real-time tyre monitoring system in line with autonomous driving technology.

The next-generation tyres birthed from this partnership will apparently be found on premium EV models from the Hyundai Motor Group in the future. The firms note that this new technology is 'critical', in anticipation that the durability of tyres will have to match impending increases in driving performance as well as driving ranges for EVs.

In addition, the new tyres should deliver more refinement by reducing noise and vibration, as well as improving comfort at high speeds.

Michelin's presence in Formula E has helped in its development of its Michelin Super Sport EV tyres
This is not the first time that Hyundai and Michelin are working together. The two firms previously embarked on a five-year partnership that saw Hyundai's first bespoke-EV, the Ioniq 5, receiving a dedicated set of tyres co-developed by Michelin.

Both firms have also increasingly made their commitment towards electrification clear in recent times. Just this week, Hyundai teased the Ioniq 6 - another fully-electric model that appears to be taking on the form of a sedan. Michelin, meanwhile, has tapped on research and analysis in Formula E to develop its Michelin Super Sport EV tyres.
