Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will be developing its own high-power charging network for electric vehicles.
The firm has announced that it plans to roll out this network in markets including North America, Europe and China, with the U.S.A and Canada network already set for construction in 2023. The Mercedes-Benz charging hubs will be located in various urban population centers, close to major arteries, convenient retail and service destination, as well as Mercedes-Benz dealership sites. The firm aims to have the full network in place before the end of the decade.
The network will comprise of charging hubs that can offer anywhere from four to 12 charging ports, and offer up to 350kW of charging power Mercedes states that the new high-power charging network will enhance its customers' experience, and accelerate the journey towards an all-electric future. The new charging points will offer a seamless experience to users, thanks to an easy and convenient 'Plug & Charge' function that allows the charging station to communicate directly with the vehicle via the charging cable, making authentication via card or app unnecessary, although these options will still be possible.
The networks are also set to enable customers to charge their vehicles via green energy, with Mercedes stating that it will strive to secure energy for the network via green electricity supply contracts or by using renewable energy certificates from an accredited supplier. Selected Mercedes-Benz charging hubs are also set to be equipped with photovoltaic systems to provide electricity for lighting and video surveillance.
The firm states that the charging hubs will offer anywhere from four to 12 charging ports, although this number can climb as high as 30 depending on location. These ports will offer up to 350kW of charging power. An intelligent charge-load management technology will also allow each vehicle to charge at its maximum capacity, keeping waiting times to an absolute minimum. Where feasible, charging points will be covered for protection from the weather.
