Bentley has announced that it will be retiring its W12 engine come April 2024.
But the iconic powerplant is not going down without one last dramatic send-off. The final examples of the W12 are now set to push a total output of 740bhp and 1,000Nm of torque, and will feature in the 18 examples of the Bentley Batur.
The 18 examples of the Bentley Batur will get the final 740bhp examples of the W12 engine All these units, of course, are already reserved by Mulliner clients, although Bentley does state that there are still a limited number of the 650bhp version of the W12 engine offered in the Speed versions of Continental GT, Bentayga and Flying Spur as well as the Continental GT Mulliner and Flying Spur Mulliner still available for order.
Bentley will be retraining and redeploying all 30 of its skilled craftspeople that hand-assemble its W12 engines at its carbon-neutral factory in Crewe. The facility that manufactures the W12 engine, meanwhile, will make way for an expanded line for the completion of other Bentley engines used for its plug-in hybrid models.
The Bentley 6.0-litre W12 has seen service since 2003 in the Continental GT. The firm has been upgrading this engine over the last 20 years, although it saw a complete redesign in 2015 with the launch of the Bentayga. The engine is said to now offer 37% more power, and 54% more torque, while emitting 25% less since it was first revealed.
