The Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer makes use of the 2.2-litre V6 engine from the world of IndyCar, paired to hybrid motors fed by supercapacitors.

Honda has finally revealed its CR-V Hybrid Racer, and what a beast it is indeed.

The car utilises a 2.2-litre V6 engine, which might not sound all that impressive, until that is, you find out that it's an engine that comes straight out of the world of IndyCar racing. Honda has previously stated that this CR-V Hybrid Racer will offer up an output close to 800bhp.

The Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer comes with butterfly half-cut doors, as well as a one-of-a-kind wrap
If that's not shocking enough, then get this: The V6 in the Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer is also paired to supercapacitors from Skeleton Technologies, and Empel MGU hybrid motor technology.

Supercapacitors? That's technology that belongs in something like the Lamborghini Sian, not a family SUV.

Honda states that this CR-V Hybrid Racer has been built to serve as a 'rolling labortory' for the continued development of electrified technology. But electrification isn't the only thing this racer is cutting-edge at: It will also run on 100% renewable fuel, supplied by Shell.

Don't go thinking your family SUV can take 800bhp though. Honda states that underneath this CR-V Hybrid Racer is a stell tube chassis, with the front suspension adapted from one found on a Acura NSX GT3 racecar. The rear suspension, meanwhile, comes courtesy of a Dallara IR-18 IndyCar. And both of these units hold onto Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 Ultra-High Performance tyres.

The lower half of this CR-V Hybrid Racer is also all of carbon-composite construction, although to be fair, the racer does get a standard production CR-V steel body from the beltline up, alongside the production car's glass windshield, windows, and sunroof.

That massive front splitter, flared fenders, and large rear wing, alongside the butterfly half-cut doors, needless to say, are not on the standard CR-V.

The one-of-a-kind wrap of the Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer comes finished in a wrap complete with a variety of ghosted images of its powertrain and the IndyCar Series circuits, designed by senior Exterior Designer at Honda Lili Melikian.
