It's full steam ahead with electrification at Nissan.
The firm has announced that it is accelerating the pace at which it will bring new electrified models to market.
A total of 27 electrified models, of which 19 will be pure-electric, are now set to hit global markets by 2030 under the firm's Nissan Ambition 2030 long-term vision. This is an increase from the previously planned total of 23 electrified vehicles, of which 15 were set to be pure-electric vehicles.
Nissan has additionally announced that it is raising its targeted electrification mix across both the Nissan and the Infiniti brand to 55% globally, up from the previous forecast of 50%.
These numbers put Nissan on-par with the targets set by Toyota and Honda, for example, which expect battery-electric vehicles to comprise up to 40% of annual sales come 2030.
Nissan is also bringing a total of eight new electrified models to market by 2030 (pictured: Nissan X-Trail e-POWER) However, Nissan's goals look less ambitious when you note that marques including Jaguar and Land Rover are targeting full electrification by 2025, while firms such as Audi, Bentley, MINI and Opel all currently have plans to go fully electric. More infomation on the electrification schedules of each marque is available here.
Nonetheless, the accelerated pace of electrification comes, Nissan states, in response to changes in customer needs and the business environment. It states that its forecasted sales mix of electrified vehicles in Europe for 2026 is now expected to hit 98%, while the same figure for Japan and China is 58% and 35% respectively. Previous forecasts for the same statistic stood at 75%, 55%, and 40% respectively.
With this progress, the global sales mix of electrified vehicles for Nissan is now expected to reach 40% by 2026, a rise from the 40% previously forecasted. Nissan also plans to launch a electric vehicle specially designed for the Chinese market in 2024, while it will continue to strengthen its electrification plans and continue to collaborate with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance in Europe.
Beyond electrification, Nissan also states that raising the customer experience through personalised services, as well as boosting its Connected Car Service strategy through enriched on-board content to enabling on-demand functions are also all within its plans for the near future.
