  • Opel to aid autonomous driving tech project as AI development partner

Linking up with the STADT:up project, a 2025 target has been laid out for the demonstration of a new environment recognition system with an Opel prototype.

As the arms race to develop self-driving cars continues among today's largest auto players, Opel is throwing its hat into the ring for the larger Stellantis Group by participating in the project STADT:up.

The name stands for 'Solutions and Technologies for Automated Driving in Town: an urban-mobility project' - but Stadt, of course, also means 'city' in German.

Existing models already offer some form of 'autonomy', with radars helping to power assistance features such as adaptive cruise control
Funded by Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, the venture broadly aims to realise automated driving in urban areas, where conditions can often be unpredictable owing to the presence of pedestrians and cyclists, road works, and busy traffic, among other factors. It ultimately also wants to create scalable solutions that can be applied to city-driving.

Where Opel will come into the equation is with the provision of AI expertise. To ensure that a vehicle can adequately tackle the variety of scenarios present in urban environments, a multitude of technologies will have to be utilised, including camera, LiDAR and radar systems.

Central pillars to Opel's work on the project include cooperation with scientific partners from education and research institutions, as well as talent from its own doctoral program, which is hosted at the marque's headquartering Ruesselsheim site.

These efforts will ultimately lead to an end-2025 joint presentation of the developed environment recognition system, using a prototype vehicle from Opel.
