In the second Certificate of Entitlement bidding round for April, premiums climbed across the board for all private car categories.

    CATPremiumChangeQuotaNo. of bids
    A$103,721▲  $7,220 507750
    B$120,889▲  $2,388 430553
    C$75,334▼  $1,467 51116
    E$124,501▲  $5,511 137252
In the second round of bidding for April, Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums climbed across all private car categories. This latest climb sees premiums for Cat A now crossing the $100,000 mark, while premiums for Cat B and E have now exceed $120,000.

The 2023 Cars@Expo automotive fair, and the various discounts offered by the dealers at the event could have spurred new car buying interest across the past week. The recent launch of the 100kW BYD Atto 3 as well as the 129bhp Volkswagen Golf here could also explain the significant rise in premiums for the Cat A category this session.

Cat A COE - Crossing the $100,000 mark

Premiums for Cat A, for cars up to 1,600cc in engine capacity and with an output of no more than 130bhp, or electric vehicles with a power output of up to 110kW, saw the greatest jump this session, rising by a total of $7,220 (7.5%) to end at $103,721.

This climb means premiums for the category now stand at 25.5% above the 12-month trailing average. The total number of bids submitted this session exceeded the number of unsuccessful bids this round by 48%, higher than the 12-month average of 37% for the category.

Cat B COE - Also hitting new highs

Premiums for Cat B, for larger cars with more than 130bhp or engine displacements larger than 1,600cc, or electric vehicles with a power output of more than 110kW, also climbed this session, albeit less dramatically. Premiums for the category rose by a total of $2,388 (2.0%) this session, to reach $120,889.

This jump sees premiums for the category now standing at 13% above the 12-month trailing average.

The total number of unsuccessful bids this round exceed the quota available by 29%, lower than the 12-month average figure for this category of 40%.

Cat C COE - Still headed downwards

Premiums for Cat C, for goods vehicles and buses, slipped this session by $1,467 (1.9%) to close at $75,334.

The number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the available quota by 127%, higher than the 12-month average for this category of 110%.

Cat E COE - Climbing with the rest

Cat E, the open category, also climbed this session along with the other private car categories. Premiums for the category rose by $5,511 (4.6%). This move has brought the current premium for the category to $124,501.

This new climb means current premiums for the category are now at 14.5% above the 12-month trailing average.

The number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the available quota by 84%. The 12-month average for this figure for the category is 72%.
