The Mk7 Golf GTI will be previewed as a design study at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris, and we have first details pertaining to what lies beneath the smooth white sheet of metal. The Golf GTI Mk7 can be powered by either a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 217bhp or a factory-installed sport pack that raises the power output to 226bhp. Both versions contain 350Nm of torque and are equipped with a Stop/Start system as standard.

The GTI Mk7 propels to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 246km/h for the base model while the higher rated engine reaches a higher top speed of 250km/h, after completing the century sprint in 6.5 seconds. The performance pack offers larger 17-inch brakes here with GTI badges on the callipers and an electronically controlled front axle differential lock.
The GTI model can be distinguished from its stock brethrens with red brake callipers, a GTI-typical honeycomb, smoked LED rear lights as well as chrome 8mm diameter tailpipes on the edges of the car.
Volkswagen wanted the new GTI to provide a more visual appeal than the outgoing model and the designers have achieved this with a lower, wider image with a more challenging character. For example, the black air inlet beneath the bumper is now painted in body colour for a more prominent presence, flanked by three lateral black aerodynamic fins. Over the rear, the new roof spoiler is considerably larger and integrated with the boot lid and the body.
The sports seats retain the tartan pattern and Volkswagen claims they have exceptionally good ergonomic properties. Dominating red decorative seams provide a sporty contrast to the otherwise 'dark' interior.

The engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox for a fuel consumption rate of 6.0L/100km while emitting 140g/km of emissions - fulfilling the EU-6 emissions standards that take effect from 2014. An optional six-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) is also available.
