2021 sees tyres and automotive parts manufacturer firm Continental celebrate its 150th anniversary. We trace the milestones of Continental and its 150 years of countless innovations, and how our roads have been made safer thanks to the efforts of this German technology-centred brand.
A history filled with innovation
Founded in 1871 in Hannover, Germany, Continental has grown from strength to strength thanks to its relentless efforts in developing new technologies.
Some of its most notable achievements include the development of the first grooved tyres for cars in 1904, dramatically improving tyre capabilities in challenging weather.
In 1943, Continental was also the world's first company to file a patent for tubeless tyres, a revolutionary technological innovation back in the day.
Still looking to the future
But Continental's innovative spirit continues on even in the present day.
The firm is at the forefront of the development of driverless mobility with the Continental Urban Mobility Experience (CUbE), a driverless vehicle intended to bring commuters to their destinations safely and comfortably.
Continental is also developing a new innovative material, Taraxagum, which is extracted from the dandelion plant. The tyre manufacturer aims to use dandelion rubber as a sustainable alternative for its raw material.

But you don't need to be working in a lab to witness Continental's technology.
Many of Continental's technologies are also available in its lineup of award-winning tyres, designed for consumers such as you and me.
ContiSeal
Looking for a tyre that can withstand punctures from small nails? Why not opt for one with Continental's ContiSeal technology?

The viscous layer means that should you drive over something that threatens to puncture your tyre, there will not be a need for immediate roadside tyre changes, as the holes in the tyre will remain sealed even if the puncturing object becomes dislodged.
ContiSeal is available on the SportContact and PremiumContact series, as well as the EcoContact Series.
ContiSilent
If you're looking for serene comfort when on the road, Continental's ContiSilent technology could be just what you need.
ContiSilent-equipped tyres utilise a layer of polyurethane foam on the inner surface of the tyre tread to absorb tyre cavity noise, offering motorists a quieter ride.
Expect an in-vehicle noise reduction by up to 9dB, without any degradation to tyre braking, handling, mileage, load, and speed capability or performance in the wet!
SSR

In the event of a puncture, this reinforced sidewall will help to prevent the sidewall from being crushed, ensuring that the driver can continue driving for up to 80km at a maximum speed of 80km/h.
Continental's SSR technology not only ensures that you have sufficient time to get to side of the road after experiencing a puncture, but also gives you better control over your car should you experience a significant tyre failure at high speed.
Continental's SSR technology is available on its SportContact and PremiumContact series.
