CCTVs do not curb illegal parking
20 Mar 2013|4,620 views
As part of a parking enforcement trial by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), CCTVs were installed beside the road along Marine Parade Central. These cameras operate 24 hours a day. Footages of violators will be handled by a contractor, which will then submit reports to the LTA.
However, that did not stop some motorists from committing illegal parking offences.
Since the implementation of the CCTVs, an average of 1,400 summons were issued each month, compared to around 200 prior to the set up. The Straits Times also reported that close to 40 vehicles were spotted parking illegally along the road, some even in front of warning signboards which clearly denote that there are CCTVs in operation.
Speaking to the local newspaper, many motorists cite convenience as the reason to disregard the parking regulations. This despite the penalties involved - offenders can be fined up to $300 and given three demerit points.
LTA will deploy similar enforcement tactics in 28 other locations islandwide by the end of next year.
