In the second round of bidding for December, COE prices fell for Cat A while premiums for Cat B and Cat E saw an increase.

The drop in premiums for Cat A could be due to the announced changes in the VES subsidies starting from next year for less polluting and thus also likely to be smaller and less powerful cars which fall under Cat A, prompting potential buyers to delay their purchases. This can be seen in the drop in bids received for this bidding round, which, at 1,403, is less than the 1,620 bids received in the last bidding session.

Cat A COE - Premiums drop $158 on the eve of VES rebate change

Premiums for Cat A, for cars up to 1,600cc in engine capacity and with an output of no more than 130bhp, decreased by $158 (0.4%) to end at $40,556 this bidding round.

The slight drop has brought premiums for the category down to 18.3% above the 12-month trailing average.

The number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the available quota by 45%, lower than the average of 53% for Cat A in the last 12 months.

Cat B COE - Premiums continue their climb, reaching a new three-year high

Premiums for Cat B, for larger cars with more than 130bhp or engine displacements larger than 1,600cc, however, took a large jump this bidding round, rising by $4,288 (9.6%) to reach $49,300.

Premiums for Cat B have not reached such high levels since the first bidding session of December 2017, when they reached $53,711.

The total number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the quota available by 62%, higher than the 12-month average of 53%.

Cat C COE - Premiums continue their upward climb

Premiums for Cat C continued their upward climb this bidding round despite already reaching all-year highs earlier in the year. This bidding round saw the premiums for commercial vehicles increase by a further $2,312 (7.0%) to end at $35,201.

Cat E COE - Premiums jump $3,990

In Cat E, the open category, premiums climbed by $3,990 (8.8%), closing at $49,500.

The last time premiums reached this high was in May of 2019, when premiums for Cat E stood at $52,502.

The number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the available quota by 46%, which is lower than the 12-month trailing average of 54%.

Prevailing Quota Premium

The Prevailing Quota Premium is the amount to be paid for COE renewal and is computed from the moving average of the previous three-months of COE prices. Those looking to renew the COE on their cars will thus have to pay the following prices for the respective months.
