This time, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recalled the 2009 - 2010 Nissan Cube for "excessive" fuel leakage after a rear crash.
When NHTSA performs a rear crash test, the car is crashed into a deformable barrier, with a 70% overlap, at 50 MPH. Then, the vehicle is quickly spun 90 degrees, to simulate the after effects of a crash.
During the spin portion of the test, the Cube leaked an amount of fuel that "exceeded allowable limits". Thus, if a spark came into contact with the fuel, the car could catch fire.
This recall effects 46,000 Nissan Cube's which were built between January 30 2009 - July 30 2010. Dealers will install a gasoline recirculation device to the fuel filler tube free of charge.
