Mitsubishi Lancer EX GT-S 2.0 (A) Review
04 Jun 2010  |  Mitsubishi Reviews
Unleash high octane driving fun with the new Mitsubishi Lancer EX GT-S. With a bold new look and an integrated chrome front grille and racy lower lip styling, I'd say it's a moving statement on the road.

Bought this car a few months ago.. like the exterior, interior and the performance of the car. Above average FC and good stability.. the size is huge for a 1.5cc.

Pickup is not as fast as a Honda but it is good enough for normal car users.

Leather seats, sports rim and audio are cool

What I like
- Size and design
- FC better than most of this size car
- Stability at high speed

What I do not like
Nothing... if not why I buy this!

This series of the Lancer does not disappoint. I have test driven the car and it handles well like it's older cousins. Acceleration and dampening is as good as ever.

But this is my point of view which means the acceleration is not the smoothest. I like my cars with a bit of character and the Lancer has plenty of that.

I have been driving Lancer EX 1.5 (A) Sports for almost 3 years. Initially, I have no intention to purchase this car as it looks ugly with the lip spoiler. But,I have choosen to top up $500 to upgrade to the big Spoiler that makes the car looks much nicer and sportier.

I have been very light footed to acheive the FC of 12km/litre. Being light footed, my acceleration has been slower, cars at the rear may think that I am a newby driver. Of course, if you need more power in acceleration, this car can delivers the power provided if you depress the accelerator harder. If you want to be lighted footed and to have the acceleration power, then this car is't suitable for you. However, the acceleration after 2nd gear onwards will not have any power lacking issue.

This car is generally reliable and very stable a high speed. The audio system has been much better if you were to compare with most of other cars.

What I like
1) Nice Sporty car outlook.

2) Privacy Glass / Shaded windows.

3) Nice Audio System.

4) Many Ralliart bodykit and accessories available for this car.

What I do not like
1) I dislike the auto wiper function. The wiping momentum can be so fast on higher speed despite during mild rain. It does not have interval wiper timer.

2) Slower acceleration (W/O depressing the accelerator hard).

I owned a Mitsubishi Lancer GT since 2008. Since then I kept comparing with other cars. Till date, my purchase for this vehicle is never a thing to regret.

When I compare my servicing charges to other cars, it's slightly cheaper but could last. Spare parts are even easier to find in sg. Lancer is made just right for our roads despite its sporty look and elegance.

Comparing to the most common known brand like Subaru, its maintenance and the parts is much more expensive. Furthermore, it runs on four wheel drive and also heavy petrol consumption.

For Lancer EX, I would not lie and say that the petrol is economical. It totally relies on how you drive it. A simple saying would be " The more you accelerate, the more petrol it takes in."

What I like
I like the sleek shape with its front sharp bonnet. Despite it's bulkiness, I still love the fact that it suits my needs in a car.

Very stable, smooth acceleration and worth the cash.

Loyal to Mitsubishi forever

What I do not like
There is nothing that I dislike about this model.

The look is killing and make me buy a 2.0l during it pre-launch 3.5 years ago. Look forward to driving it but frankly speaking, it's don't see powerful mainly due to the CVT transmission which make the car lack the sporty feel torque. pick up is ok but the engine feel draggy before the power is received, feel like the chassis is too heavy even though i'm driving a 2.0l. The price is also very reasonable for a 2.0, i bought it for 67k.

Now is the downside. I Had a very bad experience driving this car, i had sign up for the diamond care packages and my car is fully maintain by C&C till i sold it recently. Every 4 to 6 month from the day i bought it, i'll have to send in my car for repair as my checklight is on for eg. abs sensor, crank sensor.... The mechanics just can't seem to be able to solve the problems and when i requested for an extended warranty for the sensor, they rebuke me by saying that they can't do so because i change to denso iridium spark plug and use K&N filter(NOT OPEN POD). This is enough to end my relationship with Mitsubishi and C&C. I'm now a happy owner of a VW Scirooco and i can tell you it is better in any comparison to LANCER Ex. Clever Driver would know this is not the time to buy Jap Car.

What I like
1)Looks
2)Gadget -Keyless, auto headlight, auto wiper
3)interior design and style
4)Cheap (when i buy at 67K)

What I do not like
1)Troublesome
2)FC = 8.5km/l( Never hit 10km/l b4 even travelling NS highway)
3)Speed cut at 180km/hr, force to reduce speed till 100 before the car can accelerate again. Agent say is Manufacturer safety features.

4)Poor Service from C&C.
5)Engine feel draggy and sleepy
6)CVT transmission is stupid

Which is why I have decided to write my own review and share to both potential and current EX owners. I have been driving since 2001 and this is the third car that I have owned and have had the opportunity to test drive a handful of cars in the past. I got my EX 1.5 Sports in June 09, mileage approx 36,000km right now. And I guess that is fair to say that I have driven the car long enough to make a justifiable review and not just first impressions.

Till now I am very puzzled why there are claims that acceleration/pick-up is slow. I seriously disagree. To EX owners, do you guys floor it down and push RPM to 4K or higher? That is where the MIVEC engine technology kicks in and turns the car into an animal. Sure, it is not VTEC (which I have a high respect for) but MIVEC works.

And to sweeten the experience, I did some minor mods: namely drop-in air filter, exhaust and ecu tuning. I can redline, reach 6K RPM at EASE, that is where your full horses become effective. No car of its class have such joy and fun. Yes, you could say Vios but it goes wobbly at 120km/h. EX does not. It is proven, I have pushed my car to 195-200km/h at North-South Highway countless of times and still feel somewhat stable. Not as good as BMW or even a Golf GTI (which I have both driven before) but hey, those are a different class altogether. Even a Cefiro glides at such speed. But comparing Vios to EX, no chance.

And mind you, I have double-layer sound proofing on all four doors and extensively at the boot. For people who knows, that is a lot of weight being added yet I can still have a very fun sports-car-like driving experience. I kid you not, the 1.5L engine is very punchy and able to exceed your expectations if properly driven and tuned.

One big advice to current owners: My FC dramatically improved after changing petrol. SPC 95/98 gave me less than 10km/l (worst was 8+km/l) based on my driving style. Esso and Shell instantly boost me to 12km/l.

What I like
- It is not being used as a taxi. Thank GOD! Aetos is fine.
- Handling. My passengers sometimes mistook it for 4WD. I do take some credit because it is my skill (chey) but honestly, Subaru AWD has better handling. Despite of that, handling is decent and nimble for such a bulky car.
- Nice stock rims though I upgrade to 17-inch after a year.
- Exterior styling (of course, this is a subjective manner).
- Nice sporty interior with faux carbon fibre trimmings.
- Key-less entry and start. Only conti and high-end jap cars at that time June 09 have this feature.
- Decent sound system though I spent $5K+ on DVD player, amps and all that stuff.
- Last but not least, ENGINE. I think this MIVEC engine is superb. You just have to push it hard.
- And Styling. Oh sorry, I said that already. And honestly, I am currently deciding on whether to get the new Volvo S60 but still, I find the EX a prettier and sportier looking car. I just told my wife two days back that I may just get an Evo X instead. She has consent to it though. Hmmm.

What I do not like
- Seats, not enough grip when cornering. 2.0 variant (at that time June 09) comes with better seats.
- Road noise, which is why I sound-proofed it.
- Rear legroom, not as spacious as people claim la.. but still acceptable.
- Mediocre boot space but hey, you cannot have everything.
- Brakes. 1.5L model does not come with rear disc brake (not sure about new 2010 face-lifted models).
- No cruise control for 1.5 but it is fair, so it can give 2.0 variant an additional edge.
- Okay long story short, whatever I dislike about EX is just one of those little nitpicks which do not matter because EX is a fantastic car in my opinion. Will you complain if your Ferrari does not come with a audio system?

I have been driving an EX for about 1 month now and loving it each time I drive.
Since it is just 1.5L Engine, the engine performance is average (good average) but it's stylish and has a very aggresive front. It is unique because of the nose and very sporty with full body-kit and the spoiler. The Car is a bit heavy but I like it because there is a sense of safety. And yes, it is spacious.
It has a good list of features which I will write in "what I like" section. And all in all, I will just say "It's a beautiful car". (see it yourself) :) :)

What I like
Aggresive front
Full body-kit + Spoiler
Auto-climate air-con
Auto rain sensor
Auto head light
Keyless entry
Remote Boot button
Audio controls on steering wheel (yes it's useful)
Rear seats can be knocked down for those long stuff from IKEA :)

What I do not like
A little underpowered (but hey get a 2L if you can afford)
nothing else..!

Yes, i agree with mikanbabe in fc about what he commented. This 1.5 car not meant for light footed person like me. Toyota vios is the best fc for 1.5 car . Even high rev gear shift will give excellent fc... As ex is not meant for 1.5 engine, the car will be very underpowered. Only s'pore market sell 1.5. No other country got 1.5 for this model.
My relatives & friends in malaysia laughed after they had known that the car is only 1.5. Its just a trend in s’pore to get big car in small engine.

What I like
None

Underpowered

I've been driving the EX 1.5 Sports for 2 yrs. It is a very easy to handle car, slightly heavy which result in not so powerful initial start. What can you say, when it is a 1.5L engine containing a 2.0 litre body. But I would say it is extremely stable and smooth even when you drive at 120km/h.

About the FC part, i have to disagree with what the other reviewers commented. It is really up to how the driver drives.. you can ramp you car to 3000-4000rpm, and get a high FC.. I get the best FC of 16.8km/l when i keep it at 80km/h (30% normal rd, 70% expressway). If you maintain it at 100-120km/h on expressway.. it can easily capped at 15.5km/l. Even on normal roads i get the worse at 12.5km/l at least. So the point is, try to keep it ranging from 2000-2500. Of cos, if you are looking at driving from pt A (Takashimaya) to pt B(Plaza Singapura), the probably.. ard 10km/l. I must say i am very satisfied with the FC bit.

To buyer who is considering getting this car, given the high COE and costing you 85k to get one, considering getting a sec hand. It is a very good car for daily usage but for the price you are paying, you can easily get a better 2nd hand conti car.

What I like
Stylish and sporty look
Low FC
Stable
Comfy and spacious
Easy to handle

What I do not like
Slow pickup
Engine abit noisy

I choose this car even though lots of people comment about it's heavy body and high FC. I agreed with them after been driving with this car model for 2 years. If I have an chance, I will buy back this model again.

For the FC, i have been testing it with the full tank and driving constantly(step to 1500 rev and max is 2000 rev). I can travel up to the max 500km until the tank alarm is sounding. But due to poor & loud picking up acceleration, I change the air filter & exhaust system, the FC had changed. With full tank & same acceleration as above, I can travel up to 420km. As for the picking up (with air filter changed), I can feel the engine getting stronger as it absorb more air and when it drive up to 50km, you can feel the power of the engine and you can accelerate more faster to 100km.

What I like
- Spacious (esp for whose height more than 1.8m tall)
- Sound System (esp with speakers at front, back door plus two speakers inside the car next to the side mirror)
- The interior & exterior looks
- Don't feel any vibration while stopping beside buses & large lorries because of the heavy body
- The doors will auto unlock itself if you accidentally close the boot with the remote left inside the boot after you lock all the doors (I am not very sure if all Lancer Ex owners know about this)

What I do not like
- Acceleration (very slow in picking up)
- Engine Sound (Very loud in starting up, the engine is trying to push itself to speed up when you step to 3000 or 4000 rev)
- No retractable mirrors

Don’t ever buy this crap... If u wanna buy ex, please buy d 2.0, if not, u'll regret... Very high fc! Even 2.0 gt is better in fc...

Without air-con 90% of the time when driving in s’pore, i get the best of 11.5km/ltr... Not speeding or high revving, but still that’s the best that i can get. The chassis&body is too big for the engine to push. That’s the main reason why the fc is very high...
I have tested my friend’s vios fr a week. With the same driving style in s'pore,& with 85% of the time air-con switched on, i get 14km/ltr...

I cant imagine how is the fc of 1.5 ex if the ais-con being switched on most of the time... I think average fc for s'pore driving will be 9.5km/ltr if i switch on the air-con.

What I like
Stable handling on any terrain, but not on the engine...
The engine is too small...
The performance is like a Vios with 1.0 engine or a Camry with 1.3 engine!

What I do not like
Power lag!!

I have been driving this sexy EX GT manual for about a month and i really have nothing bad to comment about this car. Interior is large and comfortable comparing to civic. Exterior looks aggressive and masculine for any working executive. Handling of this car is very similar to driving a conti car, which i love it most and enjoy every bit of my time spend driving it. To be frank, i was bit worried before getting this ride as many commented that it will be noisy during pick up. Probably mine was a manual one which doesn't really affect me much since there will be full control of the car if it's a manual, unless i throttle it hard, else it's pretty much quiet. I had driven a couple japanese makes, be it mine or friends' but i think so far this is one of the best model. It may be heavier, but given the sense of safety, it may be picking up slower comparing to civic 2.0, but who cares!!! If one is looking for a lighting pick up car, spend more and go for the top of the line, EVO X. Getting this sexy dude is definately worth while.

What I like
Looks aggressive and sexy
Good FC
Large cabin space and comfortable seats
Heavy chassis (for stability and safety)
Intelligent auto sensors and AFS
Nice bodykits and interior trimming
The conti feel when having it driven

What I do not like
Very limited after market modification parts available for this make.

I collected my silver Lancer Ex 1.5 on 5/2/10. I've tested Suzuki, Toyota, Honda & Mitsubitshi.

I settled for Mitsubitshi Lancer Ex. because it was love on first sight. The moment I entered the C&C showroom, I was attracted by the "Shark-like" front & the high back. The body was high, wide and heavy. I used to have a XXX & my friends used to joke that they had to close the door gently in case it dropped off. The Lancer's doors were heavy and my 9 yrs old son has problem closing it. The 2010 version comes with dark back windows, retractable side mirrors & 6-disc players.

The interior was stylish & sporty. I like the black leather seat with white thread trimming. The panel is digitised with red back-light. There are lots of storage compartments, on all doors & next to the driver. Both the front & back seats were high with good leg space.

As a family car, I need the safety & security. The heavy body makes us feel safe inside (I presumed & I hope I don't have to find out!). There are 3 airbags. One for the driver's leg.

The front view looks fierce & hostile. My wife said it had a sad face. On the highway, I had been challenged by cars especially the Honda & BM.

The engine is loud when driving below 50. Once in the expressway, it is smooth & quite.

What I like
1) Not as common
2) The exterior & interior design
3) Made in Japan
4) Low FC
5) Heavy body
6) Dark windows
7) 16" rims

What I do not like
1) Engine noise below 50
2) Remote-key no alarm. Cannot use to locate car in carpark
3) No harzard light when door opened.
4) Heavy steering wheel

The EX is spacious and looks good both interior and exterior.
It looks sporty and fierce but thats about all.
It is a really underpowered car compared to its predecessor, the GLX.
It is slow to pick up and starting off from a stop is a pain. Feel like giving the engine a push when I tried to overtake another car on the road during the test drive. Tried the 2.0 as well and same problem, the car is too big and heavy for its own good. The turbo version did better though.

However, for the stock car, 1.5 and 2.0, the steering is clumsy and the blindspots are more compared to the other similar models of other Jap brands I test-drove. The car tends to roll and returning to normal the straight line after a u-turn is not as tight and responsive as a would expect of a car that looks this good.
I actually wanted to buy an EX 2.0 but changed my mind after the test drives I took.
The agent only knew about the air being "very cold ah" which is like duh...since cars of this standard must definitely have aircon that is cold. Or else I will buy a China car instead. Safety features weren't emphasised other than thenormal "got seat belts and dual airbag lor".

This car is good for the layman driver who has money to spare for an average car with great looks. It should not be a top choice if your concern is stability and performance, safety and responsiveness.

What I like
-exterior fierce and sleek
-interior very chic and modern
-spacious
-high profile

What I do not like
-heavy body
-clumsy
-slow acceleration
-safety features average
-rolling of car during turns
-increased blindspot area
-steering is not as nifty (1.5 has better steering control than the 2.0)

My wife and I love this car alot. With the full body kits and its aggressive staring "eyes", our car is often targeted to be challenged on the road, not knowing that our car is only 1.5L..... Its sleek design has put our first purchased car the same league as volvo/lexus! who knows Lancer EX could be so suave....

What I like
Heavy body - ensuring the safety of my wife and baby!~
Auto retractable mirrors, and headlights - so cool!~
Steering wheel is stable
Lesser body roll when turning(while picking up)
Better sound insulation than 2009 EX
Aircon is good. Mitsubishi leh!
Rides on the highway is quite comfortable.
Very Gentlemen - It greets us "Welcome" and "Goodbye".

What I do not like
Have to step hard to accelerate, but once after 40km/h, it is quite alright..
