A truck driver, who is allegedly involved in causing an oil spill along Paterson Road last Thursday, has been arrested. The Police said yesterday that the 53-year old man was caught after being identified at Woodlands Checkpoint at around 3:00pm on the same day.

The incident, which caused all five lanes on Paterson Road leading towards River Valley to be closed, led to a massive traffic jam last Thursday. The Police was first notified of the incident at around 1:30am, after which the Singapore Civil Defence Force and National Environment Agency took turns over six hours to clean the road with water jets, detergent and sawdust.

However, the road was still deemed unsafe for motorists after all the cleaning efforts, and the Land Transport Authority had decided to resurface it. The road was only fully reopened 13 hours after the oil spill.

One couple, who were among the first at the scene, suffered injuries after their motorcycle skidded and slid on the oil.

The truck driver was arrested for causing hurt by a negligent act. If convicted, he faces a jail term not exceeding six months, or a fine not exceeding $2,500, or both.
