At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, BMW has previewed a series of interactive information displays, autonomous driving control innovations and internet features it is pursuing for introduction on future models with an advanced concept car called the i Vision Future Interaction.
The rakish two-seater i8 roadster concept showcases three main display units, including the German carmaker's next generation head-up display unit, which projects information relating to speed, speed limits and navigation instructions on the windscreen within the driver's field of vision.
It is supported by a contemporary three-dimensional digital instrument display positioned behind a newly styled multi-function steering wheel. The driver is provided with information about cars on the road ahead as well as oncoming traffic not yet in the field of vision.
The most striking display, though, is a central panorama unit extending across the top of the dashboard from the centre console, displaying content sourced from BMW's Open Mobility Cloud via a wireless data connection.
A further development is Air Touch, with new human-machine interfaces provideing gesture control for all communication, information and entertainment functions of the panorama display unit. Sensors in the dashboard respond to various hand movements, including a 'push gesture', which allows occupants to activate icons on the large central display.
