Alfa Romeo has revealed the new Tonale premium crossover.
Top highlights for the new car include the fact that it marks the brand's first foray into the realm of electrification, and the fact that owners will be able to get an NFT alongside their car.
But first, let's take at look at the exterior of the Tonale. This is an Alfa Romero we are talking about.
At 4,530mm long and 1,840mm wide, the Alfa Romeo is going square against rivals like the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40.
At the front, the car gets a new floating 'Scudetto' shield, no longer simply part of the bumper but now standing as its own distinctive element. This is flanked at either side by what Alfa Romeo terms '3+3' head lights, which take inspiration from the SZ Zagato and the Proteo concept car.
Fully LED items, the head lights are said to be able to offer dipped beams that adjust their angle in accordance to the speed of the car, while their high beams will automatically cut out segments in the projection to avoid glaring oncoming traffic.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale also gets the firm's iconic teledial alloy wheels as seen on the concept car with the same name. An evolution of the perforated telephone dial theme first seen on the 33 Stradale, those on the Tonale will be available in sizes ranging from 17-inch to 20-inch in diameter.
The sporty tradition of Alfa Romeo is also reflected in the car's interior.
The crossover gets an undulating dashboard alongside instrumentation and a diagonal centre console that all face towards the driver.
Highlights in the cabin include a fully digital 12.3-inch telescopic instrument panel and a compact steering wheel, alongside a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with Amazon Alexa built-in.
The car also gets its driving mode selector, slim central air conditioning vents and external turbine shaped vents, the central tunnel and handles all embellished with a diamond texture inspired by precision mechanical processing with laser engraving.
Globally, the Alfa Romeo Tonale will be available with either a 128bhp or 158bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, both utilising a 48V mild-hybrid system that powers a 20bhp, 55Nm electric motor.
The 158bhp engine also gets a variable geometry turbocharger, while both engines are paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
A plug-in hybrid variant will also be offered, delivering a total system output of 271bhp thanks to a 1.3-litre MultiAir turbocharged petrol engine paired to a 15.5kWh battery that feeds an electric motor that drives the rear wheels.
The zero to 100km/h sprint is said to be accomplished in just 6.2 seconds for the plug-in hybrid, while its all-electric range is estimated by Alfa Romeo to stand at 60km with a mix of inner-city and highway driving.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale will also get a Dual Stage Valve electronic suspension system. Developed in partnership with Marelli, the electronic shock absorbers feature a special electroactuated valve within the shock absorber that provides independent damping curves, promising high handling performance.
The Tonale will also be offered with an NFT that is said to be able to record the car's specifications, alongside its service data, mileage, and other details, which Alfa Romeo states will bolster residual values.
