Ferrari has unveiled the new 296 GTS - an open-top version of the 296 GTB - just in time for the arrival of summer in the Northern hemisphere.
The Ferrari 296 GTS (short for Gran Turismo Spider) gets a retractable hard top, which takes a mere 14 seconds to retract or deploy at speeds of up to 45km/h.
The 296 GTS gets a different tail to the 296 GTB that features a redesigned window from which to view the V6 engine It hides away by splitting into two sections, the front half flipping over to hide under the second. Both these pieces then fold flush over the front of the engine, a design that allows the 296 GTS to maintain the engine bay's thermal dissipation characteristics while retaining a balanced design.
There's also a new window in the rear section of the engine cover, through which the V6 of the 296 GTS is clearly visible, and a height-adjustable glass rear screen has been added between the cabin and the rear deck, for optimal passenger comfort even at high speeds.
Power for the Ferrari 296 GTS comes from the same V6 unit and plug-in hybrid system in the 296 GTB. This means a combined system output of 819bhp, and 740Nm of torque, allowing the 296 GTS to complete the sprint to 100km/h from a standstill in just 2.9 seconds. Top speed for the Ferrari 296 GTS is simply stated as being above 330km/h, while its all-electric range continues to stand at 25km, thanks to its 7.45kWh high-voltage battery.
Opt for the Assetto Fiorano package and you'll also be able to get your 296 GTS in this livery inspired by the 250 Le Mans racecar Should you opt to push any harder in the 296 GTS, you'll also be glad to note that Ferrari states the redesigned tail of the car has not had any adverse effect on its aerodynamics, with the active spoiler delivering the same downforce as the 296 GTB.
And should you wish to push your Ferrari harder still, you might want to opt for the Assetto Fiorano package. As with the 296 GTB, the performance-oriented package adds special GT racing-derived adjustable Multimatic shock absorbers optimised for track use alongside high downforce carbon-fibre appendages on the front bumper that can deliver an additional 10kg of downforce.
The package also sees extensive use of lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre for both cabin and exterior, and it also is the only way though which you can get the Ferrari 296 GTS with the 250 Le Mans-inspired special livery which you see in the pictures - said to take the form of a hammer motif that runs from the front wings and central grille to the hardtop and tonneau cover and then down onto the rear spoiler.
