A new rugged exterior, upgraded cabin, and a long line of engine and transmission options all come with this new Volkswagen Amarok.

Pickup fans fall in: Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has revealed the all new Amarok.

And there's plenty of good news. First up, its bigger than ever: 96mm longer, to be exact. The wheelbase of the new Amarok meanwhile, has been increased by 173mm, so there's actually shorter overhangs, so you can take on the rough stuff more easily. Volkswagen states maximum approach angle for the Amarok is now 29 degrees, while the departure angle is now 21 degrees.

C-shaped taillights flank a wide tailgate emobssed with the 'Amarok' name at the rear
And while we are on the topic of tackling the rough stuff, water fording ability has also been increased over its predecessor. The Volkswagen Amarok will now head through a total of 800mm of water, as opposed to the predecessor's 500mm.

Second reason to want one: Despite all these changes, the Amarok still looks like the real deal.

Up front, the pickup still sports a strong horizontal, upper radiator grille, although this is now flanked by a pair of narrowed head lights.

These will come as LED IQ.Light Matrix items on the higher spec variants, said to be able to bathe the road ahead of the pick-up in light as bright as day during the night, without dazzling oncoming traffic.

The Amarok will come with wheels up to 21-inch in size, although 18-inch items will also be available. These will be paired with optional all-terrain tyres, available from the factory.

Opt for the DoubleCab Amarok and you get a cargo bed that measures 1,544mm long and 1,224mm wide
And at the rear, a wide tailgate is framed by C-shaped lights, and sports the 'Amarok' name embossed practically across its entire width.

Step inside and you'll find a mighty upgraded cabin in this Amarok.

An 8.0 or 12-inch instrument cluster will pair with either a 10 or 12-inch vertical infotainment system display. All these systems are said to come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, alongside access to Volkswagen's online services.

A multifunction steering wheel is fitted as standard here, although high-spec variants will also get a Harman Kardon premium sound system.

The Volkswagen Amarok will also offer up to 20 different storage trays and compartments in its interior, depending on the chosen specification.

High-spec variants of the Volkswagen Amarok will come with a tablet-style 12-inch infotainment screen in the cabin
And final reason to pay attention to this new Amarok: There's a long range of engines available.

Three 2.0-litre diesel units are currently offered, with outputs from 148bhp, 168bhp and 201bhp. The latter option will develop a total of 206bhp if paired with the 10-speed automatic and selectable all-wheel drive. A 3.0-litre diesel V6 meanwhile, will lead the range with an output of 238bhp.

This will be paired with one single petrol option: A 2.3-litre four-cylinder that makes 298bhp and 452Nm of torque.

Transmission options for the Amarok include a five-speed manual with rear-wheel drive for the base engine option, alongside a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic, paired with either rear-wheel drive or a selectable all-wheel drive system for the 168bhp unit.

The 201bhp diesel meanwhile, will be offered with a six or 10-speed automatic transmission paired with permanent all-wheel drive. The V6 will be paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox paired with permanent all-wheel drive.
