The new BMW M2 has been launched, with an in-line six-cylinder engine that develops an output of 454bhp and a peak torque of 550Nm, produced between 2,650rpm and 5,870rpm. The new engine also revs to a maximum 7,200rpm.
The new BMW M2 does zero to 100km/h in 4.1 seconds with the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and in 4.3 seconds when fitted with the six-speed manual gearbox. The limited top speed of the new BMW M2 can also be raised from 250km/h to 285km/h by specifying the M Driver's Package.
BMW claims that the soundtrack of the new engine will be 'emotionally rich', courtesy of the M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps. The oil supply system is designed to handle dynamic driving situations on the track, as is the cooling system.
The engine's power is relayed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission as standard. A six-speed manual gearbox is also available as an option.
Gear Shift Assistant is available, using engagement speed control to ensure slip-free operation when downshifting under braking into corners. However, drivers who do not desire this feature can choose to deactivate it in the M Setup menu.
An active M Differential at the rear axle is included as standard. It is able to generate a locking effect of up to 100% whenever required. This optimises traction on road surfaces offering different levels of adhesion for the left- and right-hand rear wheel.
The new BMW M2 will come with 19-inch light-alloy wheels at the front and 20-inch items at the rear, each representing an increase of one inch on the diameter of the wheels fitted as standard on the BMW M3 and BMW M4 models. There is also the option of fitting them with track specific tyres.
The driver and front passenger seats come with model specific sports seats which are finished with Sensatec and Alcantara surfaces. M Sport seats with integral head restraints and perforated surfaces in Vernasca leather/Sensatec are available as an alternative.
Probably the most important takeaway of this piece of news is that the new M2 will still be available with a six-speed manual gearbox The M Carbon bucket seats are an option, using carbon fibre-reinforced plastic in the structural elements of the seat cushion and backrest.
The seats also feature cut-outs in the side bolsters and below the head restraints. This helps to shave around 10.8kg off the vehicle's weight.
Lastly, a choice of five exterior paint finishes are available for the new BMW M2. These include the Zandvoort Blue solid and Toronto Red metallic shades, which are exclusive to this model.
