Only 40 units of the Huayra Roadster BC have been produced worldwide That makes special edition models all the more a rarity - and the rarity that is the Pagani Huayra Roadster BC was exactly what members of the media got to witness up close on the afternoon of 7 February 2023.
Brought out alongside the Bombardier 7500 private jet at a hangar in Bombardier Service Centre Singapore - the largest industry service centre in Asia - the open-top hypercar is one of only 40 units to have been produced worldwide. Its showcase marked the first time a factory unit had made its way to Singapore.
The Roadster BC already costs more than $4 million on its own, but we're told its price tag is estimated to swell to a whopping $12 million after registration fees and taxes. Still, even sheer wealth won't get you the car now; all units have been spoken for worldwide, including the limited units exclusively allocated to Singapore (in right-hand-drive).
The beating heart of the Roadster BC is a twin-turbo V12 producing 791bhp and 1,050Nm of torque Dubbed the "final chapter of the Huayra story", the Roadster BC isn't just a base-Huayra sheathed in a sharper-looking skin.
Rather, Pagani says that it approached the model as if it were planning for a new car, and that this was birthed as a result of strong customer demand (this special edition was not part of the original production plan). The initials 'BC' honour the late Italian entrepreneur, Benny Caiola, who was a close friend of the company's founder Horacio Pagani, and also his first customer. Meanwhile, the number '20' celebrates two decades of the Zonda, the firm's first car.
On first glance, classic Pagani elements certainly define the Roadster BC.
The Roadster BC marks the first time the firm has deployed a six-exhaust system - including these two extra ones at its rear diffuser These include the car's fender-mounted wing mirrors, leaf-shaped head lights and taillights, its hand-shaped swooping silhouette, and of course, titanium quad exhausts, mounted high and centre at the rear. In actuality, however, the car actually has a six-exhaust system; two extra rectangular outlets situated at its diffuser serve as direct outlets from the catalytic converters - a first for the marque.
As expected, the beating heart of the Roadster BC is still the glorious V12 engine - a 6.0-litre, twin-turbo unit sourced from Mercedes-AMG. Here, however, it's been tuned to produce 791bhp and 1,050Nm of torque at 2,000rpm, while mated to an Xtrac transverse seven-speed sequential gearbox.
Further drastic enhancements have been bestowed upon the roadster to make it a far more manic machine than the 'normal' Huayra, both to bring more down force and to shed weight.
In all, the aerodynamic upgrades to the car are said to generate 500kg of downforce at 280km/h Among the additional aerodynamic upgrades are a completely redesigned front spoiler and side sills. The roadster also has large air vents and on its wheel arches for better ventilation. The Roadster BC also gets a massive rear wing, and a redesigned diffuser.
Pagani says that in all, the Roadster BC manages to generate an aerodynamic load with a downforce target of 500kg at 280km/h.
With weight reduction being another priority for the performance-sharpened Roadster, new and exclusive composite materials were utilised for its monocoque frame.
Think carbon fibre is too plain? The Roadster BC uses carbon-titanium (Pagani specifically cites "Carbo-Triax HP62 and Carbon-Titanium HP62 G2 formulas") to reduce weight while increasing the car's torsional rigidity.
The Roadster BC tips the scales at just 1,250kg - less than a modern MINI Cooper 3-Door It thus tips the scales at just 1,250kg - 100kg less than the 'normal' Huayra Roadster, or, in the context of modern machines, less than a modern MINI Cooper 3-Door.
Special effort was also dedicated to the Roadster BC's specific tyre and wheel combination. The car sits on 20-inch alloys up front; 21-inch ones behind, all of which are fitted with tailor-made Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tyres and huge carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes.
Finally, don't expect a car stripped of all material luxuries simply because the Roadster BC is cut from a more performance-oriented cloth.
This carbo-wood gear lever was apparently inspired by that in the Porsche 917 In the cabin, finely-embossed leather and fine-stitching (reminding me you, of course, of the special machine you are in) abounds, while occupants are also treated to a nine-channel audio system. Evidence of Horacio Pagani's true identity as an enthusiast, Pagani says the carbo-wood gear lever was even inspired by the one in the Porsche 917 - a car its founder remains a huge fan of.
On a more localised note, the showcase of the Huayra Roadster BC at this juncture has special meaning because it marked the first public event since Eurokars Supersports, a subsidiary of Eurokars Group, was appointed partner of the Italian brand in November 2021.
More significantly for Pagani Automobili, the brand commemorates its landmark 25th year in operation in 2023 holds special meaning.
