The new BMW 5 Series has a modern new exterior, the firm's latest Operating System 8.5, and can be had as an all-electric i5 model.

BMW has revealed the new, eighth generation 5 Series, alongside the new, all-electric i5.

The car has grown in length by 97mm to 5,06mm, in width by 32mm to 1,900mm and in height by 36mm to 1,515mm compared to the outgoing model. Its wheelbase, meawhile, has been increased by 20mm to 2,995mm for improved seating comfort, especially in the rear.

The BMW 5 Series gets a chrome strip across its taillights, as well as black side skirts and flush door handles
At the front, the head lights of the car now sport nearly vertical LED elements as opposed to the 'L' shaped elements of before.

These flank a grille the projects forwards on the car, which is additionally offered with the optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting for international markets.

Look from the flank and you'll notice new design highlights for this 5 Series that include the use of flush door handles, black side skirts, and an embossed '5' on the car's Hofmeister kink. The taillights of the BMW 5 Series are additionally now divided by a chrome strip.

In the cabin, the 5 Series gets BMW's Curved Display, here merging a 12.3-inch Information Display and a 14.9-inch Control Display. This screen now runs BMW's Operating System 8.5, complete with a redesigned home screen with vertically arranged function icons on the driver's side which will allow users to access functions without having to switch to a submenu.

Embossed '5' features at the Hofmeister kink on the C-pillar of the sedan
Both driver and passenger will also now be able to play casual games through these screens via a new AirConsole platform, allowing them to pass time while waiting for the battery of the i5 to charge, for example.

The BMW Interaction Bar, a feature first saw on the BMW 7 Series and i7, is also offered as an option here. What is standard, however, is a new fully vegan interior. This is accomplished via the use of Veganza leather on the seats, the dashboard, and the door panels, as well as the steering wheel.

The lineup of the new BMW 5 Series now starts with a 520i, which utilises a new 2.0-litre engine equipped with 48V mild hybrid technology and delivers a total of 205bhp and 310Nm of torque. This engine is paired to a new eight-speed transmission.

A total output of 593bhp in the BMW i5 M60 xDrive will see it reaching 100km/h from a standstill in just 3.8 seconds
The all-electric BMW i5 range, meanwhile, starts with the i5 eDrive40 sedan, which delivers a total of 335bhp and 400Nm of torque, although peak torque will reach 430Nm when the launch control function is activated.

A battery with 81.2kWh of usable battery capacity can be charged at speeds of up to 11kW, although charging at 22kW is available as an option via an alternating current source, while charging via a direct current charger can be done at speeds of up to 205kW.

A i5 M60 xDrive is also available, equipped with a battery of the same capacity but powering electric motors at both axles to deliver a system total of 593bhp and 795Nm of torque. Once again, peak torque can swell up to 820Nm if the M Launch Control system is activated.

Charging the BMW i5 can be done at speeds of up to 205kW via a direct current charger
The BMW i5 M60 also comes with BMW's Adaptive Suspension Professional, which adds electrically controlled shock absorbers, as well as an 8mm drop in ride height compared to the i5 eDrive40 to deliver the handling prowess necessary with all that power.

International market launch of the BMW 5 Series is scheduled to begin in October 2023. The BMW 5 Series Sedan will be produced at the firm's Dingolfing plant, where the electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the BMW i5 are also manufactured.
