  • Mazda RX-8 set for reprieve and to double production of Spirit R special edition

Originally intended for 1000 units limited release, the Japan-only Spirit R, a special edition model to commemorate the RX8 is set for a reprieve.

Mazda initially planned to build only 1,000 examples of the Japan-only RX-8 Spirit R, a special edition model intended to commemorate the end of the RX-8′s 9 year lifespan. However, Due to overwhelming demand, Mazda has decided to extend production of the RX-8, tacking on an additional 1,000 units to the Spirit R’s production run.

The RX-8 Spirit R, which takes its name from the final limited edition RX-7, features a number of upgrades compared with RX-8 RS on which it is based. Outside, the Spirit R is distinguished by special head and taillights with black bezels, upsized brakes with red calipers and the requisite special edition badges. Automatic and manual-equipped cars get 18-inch “bronze” and 19-inch “gun-metallic” alloy wheels, respectively.

Inside, piano black trim adorns the transmission tunnel and the seats are unique Recaro units, while automatic models get black leather seats with red contrasting stitching. Despite the auto’s alluring upholstery, Mazda reports that two-thirds of their customers are opting for the manual-transmission car, which brings a performance-tuned suspension with Blistein dampers, special aerodynamic modifications and aluminum pedals.

Mazda plans to end production of the RX-8 in June.
