The firepower for the latest member of the S quattro Series is supplied by a new 2.0-litre TFSI engine linked to a short-shifting six-speed manual gearbox - rated at 227bhp and 370Nm of torque. The power is delivered to the road, via the credible quattro all-wheel drive system, where it catapults the S1 hatchback and S1 Sportback from nought to century mark in a brisk 5.8 and 5.9 seconds respectively, before climbing to a top speed of 249km/h.
The performance does not hinder fuel economy with returns of up to 17.1km/L from the S1 hatchback and 16.9km/L in the Sportback.
The suspension configurations have been extensively reworked, as has the electromechanical power steering. Modified pivot bearings on the front axle sharpen response when turning, and at the rear a four-link design replaces the standard torsion beam suspension.
Damper settings are also adjustable via the Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system, which appears for the first time at this level in the S1.
Throttle response and operating parameters of the electronic climate control can also be tweaked across a number of settings - including one designed to optimise efficiency.
17-inch wheels with 215/40 R17 tyres will be standard in the U.K., with 18-inch alternatives available as an option. Large brake discs - the front pair measuring 310mm in diameter - provide steadfast stopping power.
The interior is finished in dark tones inckuding glossy piano black for the air vent sleeves. Sports seats with a combination of Milano leather and Olympic cloth upholstery are standard, as are creature comforts including electronic climate control, 6.5-inch retractable colour display, a Bluetooth interface and a Driver's Information System, among others.
Topping it off, the Audi connect option gives occupants access to an array of internet based services including Google Earth and Google Street View on their mobile devices via a Wi-Fi hotspot. The new Audi S1 and S1 Sportback will be available to order in the U.K. from mid-March 2014 and will begin arriving in the spring.
