You may not care about Formula E. After all, it's a race series for all-electric race cars driven by professional racing drivers. Not everyone likes motorsport. Not everyone likes electric cars. And hell, not everyone likes cars, either. For some people, it's just a means of getting from one place to another.

But Formula E is something you should care about, because it will impact you whether you know it or not. Here, we look at five reasons why you should care about what's happening in Formula E.

1. Electricity is the future

By 2020, all Jaguar Land Rover models will be available with some form of electrification. The Jaguar I-PACE will be the start. Tesla just unveiled its new Roadster. Volkswagen is making an all-electric SUV. Singapore has even produced our very first all-electric hypercar, the Dendrobium. The reality is that electricity is the future, and manufacturers have already embraced this. Formula E takes it one step further, allowing manufacturers to develop and test new technologies. 

2. Driving innovation

Motorsport is all about innovation and change. Jaguar pioneered the use of disc brakes in the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans, with mass production only being beginning in 1955. In Formula E, the development of the batteries will take a major stride forward next year, when manufacturers can move from having two cars per race to just one car, with a battery capable of lasting the entire race. These battery developments will surely translate to road cars having much greater range than they do now.

3. Car manufacturers care

That's why more and more manufacturers are getting involved. Presently, Formula E features key car manufacturers such as Audi, DS, Jaguar and Renault, with BMW, Mercedes and Porsche all set to join in the future. Manufacturers recognise the importance of using a series like Formula E to test their technologies. Motorsport has always been a means of testing new technologies, as it provide extreme road-going conditions with which manufacturers can push the limits of their tech.

4. It's a big party!

Look past the cars and the racing, and you'll realise that Formula E is one big party! It's a vibrant and lively affair that's intentionally planned to bring fans as close to the action as possible. There's lots of things to see and do, for racing fans or and otherwise, and the location of the races in key city centres means that they are easily accessible. Don't be surprised if Formula E eventually makes its way to Singapore. It just feels like a great fit.

5. You're affected, like it or not

You may not like Formula E, hell you may not even like any kind of racing or motorsport. But ultimately you should care about Formula E because what happens here could well seep its way into your future car. Technologies pioneered and tested here will eventually find its way into our transport system. And it's not just cars either. From buses, trains and other modes of transport, Formula E's embracing of electric and innovative technologies could fundamentally impact and change the way transport systems are designed.
