All new Mazda3 zooms onto our shores

One of the core models of the Mazda brand - the Mazda3 - is back with its latest iteration. Since the production started in June 2003, Mazda has sold no less than 3.7 million units of the compact family sedan.
The all new Mazda3 comes with the marque's proprietary SkyActiv Technology - a suite of fuel efficient, performance driven components and manufacturing methods. At the same time, the sheet metal gets a full makeover using the 'KODO: Soul of Motion' design language. And there is little doubting that the new Mazda3 is more handsome looking than before.
The new car has a wheelbase of 2,700mm - 60mm longer than its predecessor. Yet, the overall length of 4,580mm is 10mm shorter than before. Standing at 1,450mm and measuring 4,795mm at its hip, the latest generation also sits 20mm closer to the ground and is 40mm wider. The changes in dimensions translate into a sportier stance and better handling dynamics, yet a longer leg room for the rear passengers.
Likewise on the inside, the Mazda3 sports segment-leading features such as the Active Driving Display - a heads-up display showing vehicle speed and navigation directions. The meter cluster has also been redesigned, with a centrally positioned analogue tachometer for a more sporty look and driver-centric experience.
Locally, the Mazda3 will come with a new SkyActiv-G 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 118bhp and 150Nm of torque. The engine is now coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission for a more direct shift feel and quick gear changes.
Fuel saving features, such as the i-Stop automatic engine start/stop system and i-ELOOP regenerative braking system, are also found in the new Mazda3. These will help the Mazda3 achieve a fuel economy figure of 17.5km/L.
The new Mazda3 will come in both sedan and five-door hatchback guises, with a choice of two trim levels for each body type - Standard or Deluxe. The higher grade Deluxe version will come standard with Bi-Xenon headlamps, LED taillights, electrically adjustable driver seat, reverse camera, cruise control, keyless entry, and built-in navigation system amidst other features.
Prices at launch (inclusive of COE)
Mazda3 Sedan Standard - $132,988
Mazda3 Sedan Deluxe - $138,988
Mazda3 Hatchback Standard - $136,988
Mazda3 Hatchback Deluxe - $142,988
