  • Audi A6 Avant combines style with functionality

    09 Feb 2012

The new A6 Avant continues the Audi's tradition of building quality cars, now boosting more practicality with the iconic Avant bodystyle.

The new A6 Avant was presented to members of the media against a serene, imperturbable backdrop, in line with its stylish and iconic Avant bodywork which has seen a long way in the company's heritage. The first Avant debut on the Audi 100 in 1977. For 35 years now, the A6 Avant aims to retain the signature elegance of Audi cars, yet offering more practicality on the go.

Speaking on the new variant, Reinhold Carl, Managing Director of Audi Singapore, says, "The Avant bodystyle always has a special place in our hearts. It's never just about practical utility but the combination of an expressive design statement that carries the premium quality that defines all Audi products. Given the extremely positive reception we had with the new Audi A6 sedan, I'm confident that this new Audi A6 Avant will once again change the game in the competitive C segment."

    Where Function meets Form
Like its sedan stablemate, the new A6 Avant features composite construction, which substantially reduces the weight of the car without compromise on the rigidity. Known as the Multimaterial Space Frame, body components are constructed with high-grade materials, carefully chosen based on their qualities and match with the specific requirements in different areas in the body. For instance, the occupant cell is fabricated from high-strength steels, while bolt-on body components are made of aluminum. Therefore, despite dimensional growth in many areas, the A6 Avant is around 30kg lighter than its predecessor.

Notably, the A6 Avant features a more functional boot area than the sedan variant. Access to the boot is now more at ease with new boot release motion sensors, which can be activated via specific movements of the foot beneath the bumper area. The boot lip is also lower, coupled to a boot area at 565 litres, which is extendable to a sizeable 1,680 litres with rear-seats folding levers positioned at the side of the boot.

    A6 Hybrid
The Audi A6 Hybrid will begin volume production, and offered in Singapore later this year. The A6 Hybrid features a parallel hybrid system, placed in between the TFSI engine and the eight-speed tiptronic gearbox, which drives the front wheels. The system’s lithium ion batteries are kept in the well of the trunk, keeping the trunk space unobscured, as with the standard versions.

Together, the hybrid powertrain delivers a total of 245hp and 480Nm of torque, when combined with the lightweight construction, provides a nifty drive. Like other hybrid systems, the A6 hybrid recharges its batteries during braking, and utilises both electric and petrol engines during hard acceleration. The electric motor alone can bring the car to 100km/h, with a range of 3 kilometres at a constant speed of 60km/h, which is a feat considering that the car is a hybrid. The car achieves a combined fuel efficiency of less than 6.4 litres per 100km, producing less than 146 grams of CO2 per km.

Audi Singapore has confirmed that two variants of the A6 Avant will be available – a 2.0 TFSI and a 3.0 TFSI with quattro drivetrain. A third 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 TDI is likely to join the lineup at a later date. The A6 Avant 2.0 TFSI and the 3.0 TFSI quattro are available now, with prices starting from $231,500 (incl. of COE).
