The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said that the free travel trial during non-peak morning hours will not include students and national servicemen who are on monthly concession passes.
To qualify for the free rides, commuters will have to use stored-value ez-link cards.
An LTA spokesman said extending the trial to concession holders will involve complex changes to the scheme and fare system.
The free ride trial will begin this coming Monday, 24th June. It will allow commuters to take the train for free if they exit from 16 destined stations in the city before 7:45am on weekdays. Passengers will enjoy a 50 cent discount on their fare if they exit these stations between 7:45am and 8:00am.
Commuters who start their journey from these stations will not be entitled for free or discounted ride.
