  • Mazda reveals its biodiesel-fuelled Mazda2 racer

The Mazda2 Bio concept is powered by a new generation biodiesel made from sustainable raw materials such as microalgae fats and used cooking oil.

Mazda is promoting the use of biofuels with a new Mazda2 Bio concept. The car, based on a Skyactiv-D diesel powered Mazda2, is powered by a 100% bio-derived next-generation biodiesel called ‘Susteo’, developed by Japanese firm Euglena Co.Ltd, and will compete in the Japanese Super Taikyu endurance race series.

Susteo is described as a next-generation biodiesel fuel, made from sustainable raw materials such as microalgae fats and used cooking oil, and thus does not compete with food crops for resources in the course of its production, Mazda states.

These fuels, it is claimed, can also be used as alternatives to diesel fuel in existing vehicles and equipment without any modification, and thus additional fuel supply infrastructure is required. Mazda expects these biodiesel fuels to play a prominent role as an excellent liquid fuel source in promoting carbon neutrality.

The Super Taikyu Series features seven rounds, starting at Suzuka on the 19 March 2022. The biodiesel powered Mazda2 will take part in the full series with a new silver livery, alongside a Skyactiv-G petrol powered Mazda MX-5 in the ST-5 production class, a class that has seen privateer teams have huge success with MX-5s over the last few years.
