Last Saturday, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, delivered five new right-hand drive Tesla Model S to customers in the U.K., marking the beginning of a planned rapid expansion in the country over the course of two years.

The Tesla Model S is a highly acclaimed pure electric sedan that covers an estimated 502km on a single charge. The electric car is capable of completing the century sprint in just 4.2 seconds.

Tesla has also completed a country-specific validation programme to ensure that the cars are optimised for every market in which they are sold.

For example, the Model S liftback sold in the U.K. is offered with specific software and configuration that will fit the needs of owners who drive on the left-hand side of the road. Everything from the wipers to the braces in the front trunk have been refitted.

The arrival is accompanied by the Model S iPhone app, available in the U.K. iTunes store. The app puts Model S owners in direct communication with their cars and owners can utilise the app to check on charging progress, start or stop charging, and heat up or cool down the Model S remotely.

Tesla has also energised the first Supercharger location at London's Royal Victoria Docks. It represents the beginning of a route to Paris, which will then link to the rest of Europe. This provides free charging to Model S drivers travelling long distances in the U.K. and on the continent. 116 Supercharger locations have been energised worldwide including 19 locations in Europe. 

According to Tesla, its Superchargers have offset more than 2.5 million litres of petrol so far.
