BMW explains a new generation of automotive body panel - thermoplastics

Dubbing it the protective external skin, BMW utilises the unique characteristics of thermoplastic, moulding it for its 'i' vehicles.

Many businesses have recognised the importance of sustainability. The automotive industry, too, has set sights into the future and embrace technologies that will help to make their businesses last.

One of the industry's forerunners, German carmaker BMW, has derived the next generation of automotive panelling. By using thermoplastics, BMW has successfully reduced the weight of car body panels to less than half of that made of steel. This made it the perfect choice for its i vehicles - the new BMW i3's body panels will be fully clad with thermoplastic panels.

The thermoplastic external skin protects the panels from weathering and other external influences. The material is also elastic, which means slight impact will not cause a permanent dent on the material.
