Nine anti-theft bicycle bays installed islandwide

Nine anti-theft bicycle bays have been installed islandwide to allow cyclists to park with a greater peace of mind. These devices work by allowing the bicycle frame and both wheels to be locked to the rack.
The new rack was designed by three Indonesian tertiary students, who took part in a competition organised by the Police and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC). The competition was aimed at reducing the number of bicycle thefts, of which 588 cases were reported in the first half of the year.
A total of 90 racks have been built at nine parking bays located in neighbourhoods such as Hougang, Punggol, Velocity@Novena Square and the Pasir Ris Sports & Recreation Centre, as part of a pilot scheme. There are also plans to install three more bays, with a total of 30 racks, by the end of the year.
In addition, an online database will be set up for the public registration of bicycle security labels, which are issued by the police and come with unique serial numbers. The database will be managed by Togoparts, an online community of cyclists.
