Toyota to extends battery recycling with Redwood Materials
20 Nov 2023|184 views
Toyota Motor North America has announced an expanded recycling agreement with lithium-ion battery recycling firm Redwood Materials that will see more of the batteries used in the firm's electrified vehicles being recycled as they reach the end of their life.
The agreement builds on an earlier collaboration with Redwood announced in 2022 for battery collection and recycling of Toyota's hybrid and battery electric vehicle batteries.
Toyota states that its automotive battery recycling needs are expected to grow substantially in the coming years as more of its electrified vehicles, such as first-generation Prius models introduced more than 20 years ago, reach the end of their lifecycle. Redwood's Nevada recycling facility will thus support Toyota's North American supply chain by aiding in the development of a closed-loop battery ecosystem, aiding Toyota's sustainability goals.
Toyota has also agreed to procure cathode active material and copper foil from Redwood's recycling activities, which will be used to enable new battery production at Toyota Battery Manufacturing, North Carolina. The battery manufacturing site is expected to come online by 2025.
