Volvo to set new net positive biodiversity footprint goal

Volvo Cars has once again announced new climate change targets, after it announced plans to cut emissions per car by 75% by 2030 in December of 2023.
The firm states that it is additionally now planning to reach zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, expanding on its previous goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040, stating that it will now only use carbon removals only to mitigate any unavoidable emissions. Aiding this goal is a targeted 100% use of green debt or sustainability-linked financing of assets by 2025.
Volvo Cars is also working to develop a circular economy to lower the material use of its activities. It states that nearly 25% of all aluminium in the EX30 electric crossover is recycled, while 17% of all steel and plastic in the car comes from recycled sources as well. The firm is aiming to use an average of 30% recycled content across its fleet by 2030, and to have its new models released from 2030 onwards to comprise at least 35% recycled content. Volvo Cars is also targeting to have 99% of all its waste either reused or recycled by 2030.
The firm has announced that it will additionally be pursuing restorative actions to encourage biodiversity. It has already conducted an impact assessment on its annual biodiversity footprint, and states it is now setting a long-term ambition to be net positive in its biodiversity footprint across its value chain and to contribute to a nature positive future.
The firm states that 69% of its operations are now already powered by climate-neutral energy, while 100% climate-neutral electricity is now used across its manufacturing plants globally. Volvo Cars has also reduced its CO2 emissions per car by 19% since 2018.
