Mazda has revived the rotary engine, with the reveal of its new MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV plug-in hybrid.
The Mazda MX-30 R-EV utilises a 17.8kWh battery, allowing it to travel up to 85km on stored electric power alone. However, if this available charge is consumed, the MX-30 R-EV will also be able to call on its 0.8-litre single-rotor petrol engine.
The Mazda MX-30 R-EV offers a total range of 643km thanks to its 0.8-litre rotary generator This engine acts as a generator, allowing users to travel without range anxiety. This engine is said to not have any mechanical connection to the wheels.
Mazda states that the rotary engine was selected as it would be able to produce the required output, while being small and light, necessary to allow it to be packaged neatly into the body of the MX-30.
Paired with a 50-litre fuel tank, the MX-30 R-EV will offer a total range of over 643km. Peak power output, meanwhile, will stand at 168bhp, more than the 143bhp that the all-electric MX-30 offers.
Mazda states the MX-30 R-EV will take just 25 minutes to fully charge its battery, although charging via an alternating current source is also possible.
The Edition R MX-30 R-EV comes with a rotor-shaped emblem embossed onto the headrests A special Edition R version of the MX-30 R-EV is also being offered at launch, complete with a Jet Black exterior finish, while its side pillars are finished in Maroon Rouge, a homage to the Mazda R360.
This special edition also comes with front seat headrests are embossed with the rotary symbol and Edition R name, while the car's floor mats feature the rotary badge and a single white line of 2.6mm stitching, matching the width of the rotor apex seal grooves.
