Volvo fans, don't get excited just yet. The new XC70 is very much still in the works, although the brand has released some details that might sustain your enthusiasm.
The car will mark the brand's first-ever extended-range PHEV - and with a pure electric CLTC range of up to 200km, thus also making it its longest-range PHEV to date. Coupled with its fast-charging capabilities, the new XC70 is said to handle most daily travel without tailpipe emissions and at a lower cost, while its engine provides freedom and flexibility for longer trips.
Built on the new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform, a premium extended-range plug-in hybrid architecture, the new XC70 is designed to meet the demand for longer-range PHEVs in China, where it will be available for order later in 2025. Volvo Cars will also be exploring potential additional markets at a later stage.
The XC70 features a shield-like closed grille at its front. Paired with an active grille shutter that adjusts automatically, this improves energy efficiency and in turn, extends its driving range. Its headlights come with Matrix LED technology, while its taillights are seamlessly integrated into its rear glass.
It shares its name with one of Volvo's most iconic models - what many may remember as the more rugged iteration of the V70 wagon - which was a versatile family car with an adventurous streak. The new XC70 keeps the fire burning with a mid-size SUV format that, in comparison, is larger and more spacious than the XC60.
That's all, folks. But fret not, Volvo has promised that more details of the new XC70 will be revealed in the coming months.
