Aston Martin Rapide edges close to launch

The production model is virtually identical to the concept that was first shown at the Detroit Motor Show back in 2006. However, there are slight differences. The tiny side intakes on the front bumpers have been deleted, while there is a new shunt line running across the side of the body.
Aston's unique 'swan wing' doors, which rise upwards and outwards as they open, have been applied to both doors, while LED tail-lights, dual exhaust tips and a boat-tail style rear decklid spoiler are the other highlights.
Under the hood, the Rapide will use a revised version of the DB9's 6.0 litre V12. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission developed by ZF and combined with Aston's new Touchtronic control, the Rapide produces 470bhp and 600Nm of torque, slotting it neatly below the flagship Aston Martin DBS.
The Rapide won't be as quick performance-wise as the coupes, but it can still post a 0-100km/h time of under 5 seconds, on to a top speed of 290km/h. The Rapide will weigh in at 1940kg, about 125kg heavier than the DB9 coupe. The Rapide's wheelbase however, is about 254mm longer than the coupe, while height is increased by 63.5mm.
Inside, the Rapide will be similar to the DB9, but will obviously have more spacious rear seats, as well as headrest mounted LCD monitors, and a panoramic glass sunroof. The Rapide will not be built at Aston Martin's Gaydon plant in England, but in Austria after Aston sub-contracted out the production to Magna Steyr.
