The all new Beetle comes 13 years after the previous one, which sold over 1 million units across the world since its launch in 1998. Volkswagen will officially launch the third generation Beetle at the Shanghai and New York Motor Shows, and the car will go on sale by early next year.
Volkswagen's chief designer Walter de Silva has given the new Beetle a meaner and lower look, giving it a more mature stance. The latest Beetle is now bigger, measuring 4,278 mm in length, 1,808 mm in width and 1,486 in height. This makes it 152mm longer, 84mm wider and 12mm shorter than the outgoing Beetle. Wheelbase stands at 2,537mm, which provides for improved cabin space, and boot capacity has been increased from 209 litres to 310 litres in the 2012 Beetle. The rear seats also split and fold down to boost capacity further.
Inside, the Beetle has grown-up, with the omission of the flower vase from the previous model. Serious features like the flat-bottomed steering wheel, two gloveboxes in the dashboard which opens up upwards and downwards, optional auxiliary instruments above the centre console and integrated audio and navigation systems with a 5-inch or a 6.5-inch screen. There is also a panoramic sunroof which Volkswagen says is 80 per cent larger than the one on the previous Beetle.
A wide variety of engines will be offered for the new Beetle, but the most common ones will be four-cylinder turbocharged petrols in a variety of capacities. These include a 1.2-litre TSI with 105bhp, a 1.4-litre TSI with 160bhp, and a 2.0-litre TSI with 200bhp. All engines come with an engine start/stop system, while Volkswagen's DSG dual-clutch transmission is available as an option for all models.
