The Zafira MPV was first launched in 1999, based on Opel’s Astra family car, and the second generation Zafira debuted in 2005. Opel has now pulled the wraps off the all-new third generation Zafira people carrier, after showcasing a concept version at the Geneva Motor Show in March.“The Zafira is Opel’s flexibility icon, and we wanted to bring more emotion and premium qualities into its third generation,” says Mark Adams, Vice President of Opel/Vauxhall Design. “The Opel Zafira Tourer makes a statement with its sleek, sporty look and premium feel.”
The production Zafira blends a mixture of the concept car’s bold design, along with Opel’s current family look. The streamlined shape is highlighted by the front end with distinctive twin “boomerang” graphics sweeping from the headlights to the fog lamps and Opel’s trademark “blade” sculpts on the body sides.
Inside, the theme continues, with an interior based around the Astra hatch as well as the concept car. There are new trim and colour options, together with a panorama windscreen that stretches into a glass sunroof that extends all the way to the back of the vehicle.
Opel’s trademark Flex7 seating system has been improved on the new Zafira, with three independent seats in the middle row that can be folded flat and moved separately of each other sliding longitudinally by up to 210 mm. Furthermore, there’s a Lounge Seating system, which allows the back of the middle seat in the second row to fold down and rotate to offer armrests for the passengers in the outer seats.
Opel says that the new Zafira offers 710 litres of cargo space when five seats are in use, an increase of 65 litres over the existing model, and that is expandable to 1,860 litres when the middle row of seats are folded down, an increase of 40 litres over its predecessor.
The new Zafira has also grown overall, with the wheelbase having been increased by 57mm to 2,760mm. The front and rear tracks have also been increased, measuring in at 1,584mm and 1,588mm, an increase of 96mm and 78mm respectively.
Opel will offer five engines when the new Zafira goes on sale across Europe at the end of the year, with three versions of their 2.0-litre CDTI common-rail diesel engine producing 110bhp, 130bhp or 165bhp, and two variants of their 1.4-litre ECOTEC turbocharged petrol engine with either 120bhp or 140bhp. All engines will come with Opel’s Start/Stop technology as standard.
Aside from that, Opel will also offer fuel-efficient ecoFLEX versions of the new Zafira, as well as models powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG). Opel are also planning to introduce more engines to the Zafira’s range in the near future.
Opel has also announced that it will continue to sell the current Zafira alongside the new version, to offer an affordable alternative in the compact MPV segment. The new model will hence be dubbed the Zafira Tourer to differentiate it from its predecessor.
