Hyundai to introduce new 1.6-turbo petrol and Euro6 2.0-litre diesel engines

The news was announced at ‘The 11th Hyundai-Kia International Powertrain Conference’ that took place in the Rolling Hills Hotel, located near the Hyundai-Kia Motors R&D Centre in Korea, and the Korean carmaker confirmed that it will be introducing a new 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine as well as Euro6 compliant 2.0-litre diesel engines.The petrol unit is a member Hyundai’s Gamma family of petrol engines, and is a 1.6-litre four-cylinder powerplant that uses a twin-scroll turbocharger along with an air guided intercooler, direct fuel injection system and dual CVVT, to produce a maximum of 204bhp and 265Nm of torque.
This engine meets California’s stringent ULEV-2 (Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle) standard as well as Euro5 standards, and it will be used on a variety of Hyundai and Kia vehicles including the Veloster sports hatch, which will be the first model to receive the engine in mid-2012.
Hyundai also announced the introduction of its new R 2.0-litre engine, which is a four-cylinder unit that produces 150bhp and 382Nm of torque. The new diesel powerplant complies with the more stringent Euro6 emissions standards, and will be used across the Hyundai and Kia range including the upcoming Santa Fe successor.
